Chicago is another one. Guns are for the most part illegal there. The police haven't done shit about the crime there and the south side of Chicago is a near war zone.

You do know that the per-capita consumption of alcohol plummeted during the prohibition, right? Just because SOME of those who currently use a legal item legally would continue to seek out and use it when it's illegal to do so at all, does NOT mean everyone would. In particular, firearms are selected for suicide most often for reasons of ease of access compared to effectiveness.

I like how they work mechanically and how they influenced history and developed alongside society and for different needs.

Ottoman Turkey (1915 - 1917) - 1-1.5 million Armenians murdered after gun surrender/confiscation. 4,000 Armenians who defied the confiscation order survived the genocide by repulsing Turkish attacks until British and French forces rescued them.
Soviet Union (1929 - 1953) - 20 million anti-Stalinists murdered after firearm registration (1918) was followed by a ban (1918). Communist Party members were exempt from the ban.
Nazi-Germany (1933 - 1945) - 13 million Jews, gypsies, and anti-Nazis murdered. A 1928 law required a permit to own or purchase firearms or ammunition, 1931 that law was made more strict, and in 1938 a complete ban on firearm ownership by Jews was enacted. The only Jews who stood a chance (though eventually being defeated), were the armed Jews in the Warsaw ghetto.
China (1966 - 1976) - 1 million (some estimates reach 30 million) anti-Communists were murdered (most through starvation). 1912 firearms laws required permits for firearm ownership. In 1957 a complete ban was issued leaving Chinese peasants completely vulnerable.
Guatemala (1960 - 1981) - 100,000 Mayans were slaughtered. Due in large part to the military's monopoly of force, and onerous gun permitting laws, the availability of firearms doomed insurgent Mayans trying to reclaim the democratic government which failed in 1954.
Uganda (1971 - 1979) - 300,000 (mostly-Christian) Ugandans were murdered by ~25,000 ill-trained and ill-disciplined soldiers. The genocide likely could have been averted if guns had not been banned in 1969.
Cambodia (1975) - Pol Pot murdered ~1 million educated persons. After inheriting French colonial gun control laws (which limited firearms to one per hunter) and taking power, the Khmer Rouge went door-to-door collecting all weapons. This led to the most efficient genocide of the modern era.

In Japan the main reason there's less violence is that people straight up aren't doing as much violence. It's not that they can't, they just don't.
