Because the Democrats were horribly arrogant and put the worst candidate they could against him while behaving in an openly vile manner to anyone not already waving their banner. They went out of their way to make it clear that they were against anyone not towing their line. You don't get us to vote for you by insulting us and telling us you're going to get rid things important to us. He's probably going to win again in 2020 because the whole Russia conspiracy theory falling apart is likely going to fuck them hard and I don't doubt for a second the candidate they're going to pick is going to be awful once again.

The more that drop out the more discouraged dems will be which means less voting because dems are too prideful to just get behind the one candidate with a real chance
