My friend has one and she is honestly the most caring and kind dog I've ever met. Jas a reverence for any kind of life and is especially good with children and young animals. She was an abused shelter dog when he got her over a year ago. I think it honestly depends on their owner what kind of a dog they are.

I hate them. They are a plauge atm. Not full breeds, but every shelter across America is full of pit mixes. No one wants this.

Most pits are not dangerous to people and there are other breeds that can be dangerous.

Pits are only targeted for bans because of social conditions we've adapted them to. Without changing those social conditions, banning a breed is pointless cause we'll just find replacements

I've owned 4 pittys so far. 2 have passed of old age. One is a senior now. And I have a new 1 year old pup. None of them have ever bit anyone out of nowhere or "just snapped". I can agree that if just one was to never bite and the other three did than it's just coincidence that the one dog happened to escape his genes. But with all 4 being good dogs it pushes me to believe otherwise. Did I just get lucky 4 times in a row with 4 different blood lines when "most pits will attack out of nowhere"?

While I'm not for banning them, or making any effort to wipe out their gene pool.... I think like owning wild animals... bears... lions... gorillas... it should be limited to certain areas were the community has voted they are OK with this, and I think you should have to apply for special registration to own one.

I say this because even most Pittbull owners will tell you, they are NOT a good first dog for a family to have. They are better off with people who have grown up with dogs, or pittbulls or are very good with animals in general. This is true of a few other dog breeds as well.

Sigfried And Roy, went for years and years without incident with their tigers. And many tiger owners never have incident with their pets their whole lives. But I disagree that every violent pittbull is the result of hitting it with a stick and training it to be aggressive. I think many a violent pittbull, or pittbull attack was the result of not having the SPECIFIC and EXACT understanding and attention to keep them from falling back into what they were bred for.

i think owners deserve everything bad that happens. hopefully their kids so they stupid genes don't spread farther.

booze, maybe, but it would be tough to do politically
sugar and fatty foods - again, needs controls like what we already have and reducing garbage food availability is a good thing by cutting subsidies. Again, good luck in pushing that through, since agribusiness will squelch it.

a white coworker of mine just recently bought a puppy. I told him he was retarded, since he has young kids, but of course he responded with the whole "it's how they're raised" thing. I told him to go look up accounts of where pits that were raised as family pets just snap for no reason and either maim or kill a kid in the house. I'm sure he never did.

Exactly. They are different than normal dogs and their ownership should be restricted to maybe service dogs for law enforcement or some other type of similar use.

The problem lies in the “reason” they attack. My ex had a dog who bit pretty much everyone in the house at some point. One time she was just walking to leave the house and her dog ran up and bit her leg. Another day she ran the vacuum and the dog turned around growling at me then lunged at and bit my hand. The dog was never abused and always socialized. But it was a breed mix that was known to be like that. Some poodle mix.

Not bad dogs. The issue is when they do attack people or other dogs, which plenty of dogs do, it’s often worse since they have very strong jaws.

I think its fair to say that, most times, what makes them violent or unmanageable is when theyre raised by niggers or families who dont know how to treat animals (personal space, not teasing with food, not scaring, not pulling tails, etc)

Not any different than any other dog except for one key difference: the types of people attracted to pit bulls tend to also be the types of people to be actively seeking an aggressive dog. Their understanding is that Pit Bulls are aggressive, so they go for them. What makes Pits aggressive isn't being a Pit Bull. It's that the overwhelming majority of Pit owners do not get their dogs snipped early enough, if at all, to "preserve" the aggression which is actually found in every dog breed. Couple that with being trained to be aggressive and it's a recipe for disaster.
I myself have a half Pit half Labrador Retriever and she is the sweetest dog you could meet, provided you don't mess with her food while she's eating it.

Not who you replied to, but studies of genetic indicators and frequencies of dog attacks show that they are not disproportionately violent. The problem is that people who want a violent dog get a pitbull, then train/abuse it to be violent. You could do the same thing with a goldendoodle.

The plural of "anecdote" is not "data". Properly controlled studies show that they are not a disproportionately violent breed.

This. Any time anyone tells me a story about a pit that "lunged for their dog" etc. I ask, "and how did the owner respond." The person telling the story usually replies indignantly, "They didn't even blink. No apology or anything."

Dog breed experts make money purely off branding. Mixed breeds are healthier (and most pits are mixes), but you can't sell someone a "half pit, half something else" for $3000.

They are as good as the people who raise them... but this goes for just about any canid.

They are dangerous, due to how they've been designed. They aren't some sort of paragon of aggression, a lot of the issues around them exist because how they're raised by some people. That said, I do think they're predisposed to being more aggressive than say... A Labrador retriever. People wouldn't choose them to be fight dogs, if they were reluctant to get aggressive. That's just my thoughts, though.
