Your parents (or lack of), teachers (in some manner, shape or form) and other mentors can help steer your life in a direction, whichever direction that may actually be. However during all of this, if you're still alive and have most of your bodily functions, there are a whole world of opportunities available to you. Especially in this day and age of technological marvels and the wonders of the Internet to provide information (and, of course, misinformation.)
The military should not even be an option at this point, because not only is there enough information to suggest that joining it is only for those who've allowed themselves to be brainwashed by a military-industrial complex keen on retaining what power they have left ... but there is also enough information available for people to make their OWN decisions on what they'd like to do, instead. Still, people join. They wish to be broken down and remoulded in somebody else's image. This is a sign of weakness. Of allowing one's self to be influenced and corrupted by those with power and ambition. Essentially, those who join the military are no-better than mindless sheep.

I don't think you understand the basic psychological tenants that make the military an emotionally attractive place.
Yes, 'emotionally', because humans have an emotional drive to 'belong'. To have commradere and a sense of acomplishment and acceptance. The military has been hiring psychologists for 100 years to teach them how to better run training and exercises to get their personnel to operate more efficently, habour more loyalty, and inspire a sense of patriotic (group) meaning which will make them most effective and cohesive.
Yes, this is manipulation, so you are right there, but they are meeting some basic human needs in doing this. Human needs which are not really being met many other places. Sure, if you are fortunate you may find this sense of tight-knit closesness elsewhere, maybe at your church, but in case you missed the memo, all over the christian (western) world: God is Dead. Churches aren't really what they once were, and people percieve them mainly as a sometimes obligation or as a haven for pedophiles.
Inside the military you don't have to worry about too much either. Your washing is done for you, your meals are cooked for you, your accomodation is provided, your clothing is provided. You get to be physical all day and hang out with people who become your friends (and most males including you OP, which is obvious from your post, do not have a lot, or any, close male friends with a deep connection). And then on top of all that they get a small stripend to use on the weekends when they can visit the local bar and get drunk and maybe fuck one of the army orbiting townee chicks who like to fuck soliders/sailors/etc.
To be honest, compared to the complex, overwhelming, lives you and I lead, I can see the allure. It's not for me, but I understand the allure.

The thing I miss most about being younger was playing competitive sports and constantly trying to be the peak edition of myself and beat others around me.
