I've never seen 1984, I've seen 82. But I've seen millennial as 1980.
There is some overlap in the actual cohorts. I understand where both groups come from since I was born in 80. Kids born in the 70s remember different things about the 80s, and my gen had the internet in HS, but not to the same degree as later groups.
