Ideally, mods are supposed to moderate abuse OF the platform, not necessarily abuse ON the platform, to take a page from ancient Usenet wisdom. As long as there aren't a million threads being spammed at once, then freedom from censorship should allow for the posting of things we hate, as well as the things we love.

All things come in cycles. Wew Lad, Banana, and even Andy's creamy logs. All forced memes will fade with time, but they will forever bond us together in our mutual hate for them. And one day, we will remember them fondly in nostalgia.

A few years ago I took a 30 minute inter-Europe flight, check Yea Forums before and after, and realised that the entirety of the boards had changed. I did some research and learned that, at that time, Yea Forums was a collection of "instances" where 90% of the content is pre-written, and 10-20 users at a time get assigned to an instance. What they look at and what the post is monitored, and using cookies/IP address they made sure you stuck to the same instance. But if you change country/laptop and you have no connection to the old instance you will see something completely new.

With the advent of VPNs I don't know if they still do this, or if they use some more advanced tracking software that works some other way, or if they just don't do that anymore. But certainly at one point Yea Forums was used to research autist's habits.
