came here to say this. Seriously. I had nightmare dandruff for years, head and shoulders didnt help, coal tar didnt help. My doctor gave me a prescription for ketoconazole shampoo (prescription strength is only 2% vs 1% otc so you could try otc first)- I haven't had a single piece of dandruff since the day I first used it. Only have to once every few weeks now too.

I stopped using shampoo more than 10 years ago and I recommend it to everyone. Water is plenty effective for cleaning yourself. You want your natural oils to accumulate, they will balance out to what you view as healthy, full hair. Shampoo strips your hair and scalp and dries it out which is the opposite of what you want if you have dandruff, you need as much hydration as you can get.
Be aware there is an acclimation period where your hair will get a bit greasier than normal. It doesn’t last long.
You may think I look like a dirty hippy, but really I am clean cut and appear well put together. Try it.
