it is mostly the older generation and military that love and respect USSR. not all of it, but the idea of the accomplishments.
for example Stalin. he took a faltering agrarian state and beat the fucking nazis. looking at real history, it is obvious how ww2 was won. his changes to the structure of the country (sometimes abrupt and violent) won the space race (first man in space is the win, not moon landing bs). he ensured that 200+mil people had jobs, food and shelter. on the average everyone had access to approx the same stuff. in the west there is a huge disparity where people struggle more than under socialism.
persecutions that are brought up are inflated and impacted a small portion of the population. yes, innocents dead and imprisoned is bad, but the structure and control created benefited hundreds of millions at the expense of hundreds of thousands. choose your pick.
and then the opposite happened: the collapse of an empire (yet once again) where people had moderate means and then became destitute overnight. that was anti-communism, pure capitalism that destroyed every aspect of people's lives. those who remember the 'crazy 90's' would rather live under Stalin than Yeltsin. the only thing Yeltsin got right was selecting Putin.
so, back to your question... current young people have no clue what their parents experienced and what it took to survive and therefore will become 'rebels without the cause' and 'fight the power' . it was so funny when recent protests against the pension reform had a bunch of teens holding signs 'don't take our pensions' . that just showed what these protests really are.
yes, there is a lot of fucked up shit and politicians (esp. on lower levels) don't give a shit and just want to get rich, but it is much better than 20-30 yrs ago. some what the simplicity of the soviet times and its a mix of nostalgia of their childhood and fear of the future.

I'm in the u.s. military and my fiance is from Ukraine. I met her there and have made multiple personal trips to go see her. I've been very concerned with the situation over there and fear a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. I was just Russia would be treating Ukraine if Russia ended up taking it over. It seems the US is only dipping its foot in the water with this one. even US citizens over here look at Ukraine's government as corrupt but still views them as our Ally. Of course personal issues are discussed between close people. As for me I am very sensitive person and I always show my empathy to others so even strangers and working colleagues try to develop a close contact with me as soon as they can. Russian people are not fighting their struggles without a single word spoken about it. We just prefer to have 2-3 close people who have earned our loyalty (and vice-versa) rather than tell the whole world what do we think and what do we feel. And btw family ties are a big deal in Russia. If you never speak about your family or parents you are considered ‘strange’ and somebody can try to ask you about the situation between you and your family.
I remember one example from my childhood which is very popular in Russia when elders raise their children. My grandma took the broom and took one stick from it. She said ‘look how it can be broke easily. now take the whole broom and try to break it %anonname%. That’s why you should always stick with your mother and father and me and grandpa’.
