Saying that is just as wrong as saying "You will never beat the military because they have tanks, planes, and nukes". It's way more complex than that.
In Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq it was not merely farmers with guns. They were supported by a national military (VC being supported by North Vietnam) or a foreign sponsor (Afghan fighters in the war with the Soviets getting a lot of American-made stuff and CIA training.) They had advanced weapons, communications equipment, training, and access to intelligence. The same would be for some type of conflict in the US- the entire military would not stay loyal to the government and there would be defections, there could also be another nation trying to get weapons in to support the conflict. Not that it would really be needed in the US because it's not like there's a shortage of weapons. Though if some Russian cargo plane wants to drop me an AK-74 and some crates of ammo, I would not be objecting.
