it's much more responsive and quick to launch than photoshop, and the implementation of the tools feels much smoother and gives you less shaky looking lines, in my experience downsides: no text tool, limited transformation tools, limited filters and effects

Yep! I usually just google something like "paper canvas texture." Make sure you include "texture" in your searches. Then I just tweak the texture in-software to how I like it. Textures are great. Maybe you could try getting a watercolor texture and setting it over your work? Not sure how it would look, but it wouldn't hurt to experiment!
