i live in Japan and bullet trains are definitely the way to go.
Nothing like zipping across the whole country in ~4 hours while going 500km/h, sipping whisky and playing vidya. Seats are large and comfy, power outlets, total silence in the cabs.

nah. fucking love them. super friendly and hospitable people. usually the only hang-ups are when their english is bad and they dont/cant speak.
if you can hold a conversation in friendly japanese, specially in a local dialect they'll drink with you until the bars close at 7am.

Witnessed. Also no, i have never met a more friendly country. But, while i visited, we meat an American girl who had lived there for 2 years working, and told us a bit about the culture, and that people there often tend to act different than what they feel, like being fake.
But then again, might just be the people she worked for. We didn't once meet anyone who seemed in any way fake, so i dunno.
We once went to a zoo (i think it was in Tokyo somewhere) and couldn't find our way in the underground metro system. An old fella came up to us, couldn't speak english, and tried to ask if he could help. We pointed at the zoo, and he did his best to explain where we should go and how to get there. Now, here comes the craziest thing. We went there (10 minute route from where we started), and the old man catched up to us (completely out of breath) and said sorry like a million times (it's closed, i forget, sorry sorry, closed, sorry).
And we weren't even sad or angry or anything, if it was closed then it was closed, but he just had to make sure we weren't going anywhere in vain because of him i guess. That's the type of people i think most of the Japanese are.

Before the days of smartphones and Google Maps my mother came to visit from overseas. She "thought" she remembered the way to my house but she got the address wrong by a block.
She didnt show up on time, i started to worry.
She shows up hours late at like 10pm drunk as a skunk
Turned out some local family saw a poor middle aged gaijin lady walking around lost and despite not being able to speak English, invited her in, fed her, gave her wine and they used Google Translate on the family laptop to shoot the shit for a few hours until they realised where she wanted to go, then they dropped her off in their car.
Trick is to just avoid Tokyo, even non-Tokyo Japanese hate Tokyo people for basically being soulless robots.
I also dropped my sunglasses once and some lady chased me 2 miles to give them back to me.
Buddy of mine dropped his wallet but it had no cash in it. Got it back a week later at the police station. It had 1000yen ($10) in it with a note saying "Hey, I found your wallet but I didnt want to return it empty and feel bad so here's a little present".
