English is becoming a hyper analytical language so a one syllable word makes way more sense to be spelled as "thru" vs "through." Also, half of those letters aren't even pronounced. Technically it should be pronounced as "thruff" or "throwg" according to the actual spelling.
Language, especially ones influenced by other languages, tend to sort themselves out eventually so this sort of simplification is fine.
