I used to think so too. Then I read a book that talked about how they've expanded so far into everything - oil, food, telecomm, etc. - that even drying up drug profits won't necessarily stop them. . . though doing do might've worked well back in the 80s. One book really changed my mind.

Would also like to add that high power weapons does not mean semi auto AR15s. It means automatic rifles that the ordinary US citizen can buy. These illegal firearms for us are obtained almost entirely through black market dealings. The only way the cartels are getting shut down in this day and age is by exerting the full force of the U.S. military to sweep through Mexico and burn them out by one. The issue with that strategy, however, is not only that these cartels are so diversified at this point they probably could regroup in other nations within Central and South America, but that we would also possibly have to go to war with the corrupt factions within the Mexican government itself.
Add onto all of that the serious implications of having a war on our own continent and the drastic increase of possible retaliatory attacks and it just doesn't seem an enticing choice.

A wall isn't going to do shit. To think that a wall will magically solve all the problems is completely retarded. See: ladders, tunnels, legal ports of entry, drugs produced in the US. The only way to stop the cartels is to take away their income. To do that, you have to remove the black market around illicit drugs. Then, invest in trade so that mexico can invest in education to grow their middle class. Educated people don't join cartels because they can get decent paying jobs. It's actually kind of simple if you think about it.
