My thinking is there would be 1000 deposited into their account, but the food stamp program or housing would reclaim that 1000 if they were on welfare. In others words, show they received it so they don't think they are being discriminated, but take it back to pay for the programs. In regards to people in prison, they already cost the system 30,000 to 40,000 per person. Seems like a simple fix for liberals that wouldn't agree. The problems you describe would end up win-win either way. -say it does cause inflation. Then everyone is back to their starting point. People will still be required to work. -say it doesn't cause inflation. Then people will have money to do stuff, especially if they are in grinding poverty. Even if they are lazy, it's not anything different than people that have a lot of money nowadays and choose to be lazy. In regards to your point that welfare could grow. I would rather that welfare help everyone in society. What's to stop more welfare without UBI? You know the recent tax credit went from 1000 to 2000 per child for families. This only helps you if you are married or a single mother. Most single men do not get any welfare in most states. This would at least move welfare so some men are getting more of the pie.
The proposal is that if you get welfare, you are not eligible for UBI. Unless say you get 400 for food stamps, then you could get 600 from the leftover. I'm not sure whether the proposal though is to take into consideration medical expenses. With some people on Medicaid, that 1000 could be eaten up really quickly, and there might be some voters who feel like they got ripped off. Another thing I would propose is that anyone with current debts, would have UBI go towards their debts until they are paid off and then they would be eligible.

This. We rent through a property management company. The boomer that owns the condo lives halfway across the country. The Boomer I rent from knows we don't make so much that we wouldn't qualify for UBI, because we're late on rent so much. But he's fine with that, because he grinds us into dust on late fees, and we always come through--we both have varying incomes. If there was UBI, I guaranty the Boomer we rent from would raise the rent by $1,000 a month. So it would be a great welfare program for him. And the grocery store would probably figure they could jack their prices up a bit too. So it would be a great welfare program for them. Not so much for us.
