A lot of good techniques to learn, sport-wise. United with other disciplines, learning wrestling at a young age is useful when training combat sports. Especially with BJJ, it's very good as an initiator for bringing the opponent to the ground, hence eliminating the opposition's striking potential.

However, kids learning wrestling without the proper motivation, or purely for PE purposes only is quite nonsense in my opinion.

I wrestled for many years. was on varsity 9-12 grade anywhere from 125 to 152. I enjoyed 145 the most and was most prominent at it. won conference junior and senior year and finished 3rd at states senior year. y'all can say it's gay as fuck, and it kinda is actually. but running marathons up and down stairs, shooting at the air hundreds of times over, and 15 minute live wrestling at the end of practice will push you to levels you didn't know existed. shit built mad character and I'll never have to worry about losing a fight... not really anyway.

well luckily I've got a good chin and took a couple boxing lessons. my coach all 4 years looked just like a regular dude you'd see in a bar in anytown USA. kind of how Fedor looks. bit chubby, hair a mess, just not someone you'd really be afraid of. well my coach could max 500 el bees on the bench and knew how to break a man's arm in seconds. How is it a practical martial art? Being able to dominate someone physically to the point where they are unable to fight back helps a lot in a fight. You don't have to be the hardest or fastest puncher, but if you can easily make someone defenseless, you can do whatever you want to them. It's very awkward to defend against if you've never had any wrestling experience. It's also practical in real life because it demands every ounce of physical and mental strength you have to be good at it, so that helps in every day life if you're in a situation that demands physical or mental toughness.

There's some useful moves in wrestling, but most martial arts teach those moves plus a bunch of other much more useful moves that would be illegal in wrestling.

Wrestling might win you a drunken fight in a crowded bar, but out in the open it's not going to do you much good.

You can be intelligent and still enjoy wrestling. It's not a sport that you can just be good at and make millions of dollars without learning how to read like football or basketball. Almost all wrestlers will have to get a real job, and if they were good enough to get a scholarship in college, that means they have to pay attention in class and graduate if they want to have a good job when they are out of school.

Wrestling ia what you make it, at the low end you may have suppressed homophobia etc. However at the higher tiers it's an absolute war between you and one other, your hard work and training vs. there's and no one elae to rely on. Actually, I don't think highly of it at all. It is a good street fighting method. That's about it. The fact is that a mixture of BJJ, Wrestling, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and American Boxing is the best hand to hand combat style... hence MMA.
