Data is cool. I've taken about 4 statistics related classes so far in my degree, 3 were electives. I'd love to get into machine learning but I've been pretty lazy lately.
The most I've done so far was make a thread downloader that I don't use anymore. I'd love to see it if you do make something like that. It would be cool to see what images are the most popular, but there's no easy metric here for that. Do keep me updated

Hm, there's not an easy metric, but it would be possible. If I were to take every image posted, get the md5 for every image in a text doc, and then count by incidence then that would be somewhat doable. Not easy, I'm not sure how I would automate it, but the methodology is there I think.

The automation is pretty easy, at least in C#. The thread downloader wasn't hard to make, and you'd only need to extend from that to store md5's. I'm more thinking of analysing relies to image posts to gauge popularity too. There's no up-vote system here which makes things difficult. There's probably so much more you can do than too which would be pretty fun.

You could also implement using a reverse image search to find the booru site the image also resides in and keep track of the most popular tags, etc.
Maybe go full creep and keep a record of all the namefag's post times, then do some stats to find the days & hours we're most likely to be here.
Kind of gives you an insight into what some big tech companies are already doing with all our usage data

Yeah, I've noticed it. Sometimes I want to cancel but fail to do it quick enough, or I'll accidentally double tap it and post without NS. I get a bit sad when I fail in that way

Just dew it. Most languages provide all the necessary features to easily download webpages. All you should need to know after that is HTML so that you can sort through the webpage code after you've grabbed it. Also learning how to use regex queries will help immensely when writing an algorithm to sift through HTML source code, but regex isn't necessary to get started.
