9/11 was our nation's deathblow. It just wasn't a headshot, it was a gut wound. We've been bleeding out for 18 years. Our government (and at the time, our presidential family) failed to explain much of 9/11 in a way that was satisfactory to much of the American public, and a catastrophic metaphorical sinkhole began to form under our faith in government. This has slowly spread to undermine faith in other authorities, such as education or science. If you can't trust the government, why trust the schools that the government helps fund, or the scientists who work for government agencies like the CDC?
Now we've got flat-earthers, anti-vaxxers, "race-realists", and an explosion of anti-intellectualism. It'll get worse, and worse, until America either fully self-destructs or becomes so weak that it gets devoured by its enemies and neighbors.
