It's a manga that's been running for 20+ years now, and it's pretty incredible. One of the things that's most interesting about it, is that the author has basically reinvented himself in his style several times throughout the series, while still keeping it true to its roots. During the first 10 volumes (referred to collectively as the "Golden Age" arc), it's basically gritty 80s style manga of purely dark medieval warfare, becoming borderlined historical fiction. but in volumes 11-12+ literally hell opens up and pours itself onto earth evil dead style but in a completely serious manner. Over the next ~5 volumes you have every bit of bad in his world corrupted and risen to full blown demonic rape-fests; corrupt priests burning everyone at the stake, packs of roving goblins kidnapping women, raping and impregnating them to make more monsters, an evil god-emporer who tries to take over the world etc. It then turns into a traditional swords/sorcery fantasy where Guts assembles a team of rag-tag heroes to destroy the five God Hands of hell, one of whom was his best friend and rival during the Golden Age.

God I love this manga. I also highly recommend watching the 1999 anime, it's the closest we'll get for a decent animation adaptation.
Though the director of the netflix Castlevania anime(cartoon?) has taken an interest in doing it so keep your fingers crossed kids.

The original anime is pretty great, I think it captures the feel of Berserk well.

I remember when my big brother brought that manga home, i read it over and over, i learned to be like Judeau... that managa drove me to be a tri-state wrestling champion. brave, evil, tough.. everything.. this series touched me like no one will ever know.. im 33 now and i still read the fuck out of it and re-watch it every year... including the new 2 seasons that everyone hates but me.. read berserk kids.. it will make you a better man.

I respect that user, thanks for sharing. Berserk has some really good role models in it. I've used it myself when going through hard times, remembering that Guts went through worse.
I think any piece of media has lessons to be learned from it. I'm always glad to see that people are making that connection with Berserk.

my big bro was a loser, the best thing was berserk.
Here is a memory, i remember the 3rd book he brought home was the one when guts and griffish faced Zodd for the first time. I was going to face a top 3 wrestling champ.. i remember looking my face CLOSE to the pages seeing the emotion that Gutts and Griff showed... i showed up to the match.. i told everyone i was going to go "berserk" I won that day. i lost 3 more times in 3 years.
Berserk taught me more then my dad. more then my team or coaches..
