That's a logistical impossibility. In the mid 1800's you still had state militias whose first loyalty was to the state, and the states were run as sovereign bodies overseen by the federal government. Now we have the national guard, whose first loyalty is to the federal government, and the state governments are little more than subdivisions of the federal government. Add to that the fact the utter reliance of every modern economy on interstate trucking and internet commerce via postal delivery and any group that tries to isolate themselves from the rest of the country is on a short road to utter failure (unless they're Amish).

It's complicated.
Agrarian southern states, prior to secession, had started selling unrefined textiles directly to Europe, bypassing the north's trade-based economy. Cutting out the middle-man, so to speak. This was against federal law because states aren't supposed to negotiate their own treaties separately from the federal government. This is what started it. The republicans decided to kick the south's economy in the dick by threatening to ban slavery, and this is the platform Lincoln ran on. Southern states said that if he was elected they'd secede before he had the chance to fuck up their economy. Technically the first shots were fired by confederates when union soldiers wouldn't abandon Fort Sumter, but really the union was just waiting for an excuse to forcibly retake the southern states and replace the uncooperative state governments and farm companies with obedient union-appointed farm companies and interim government (the reconstruction period). As much as elementary school likes to wave slavery around as the root cause of the war, it was really the economic problems the north would have if they lost the ability to buy textiles from the south and resell them to europe. And, technically, the southern states doing this *was* illegal.
