id assume the argument for cremation comes from the fact only thousands of bodies were found. (it was in marshland, so they were limited in how much they could bury, to avoid poisoning themselves.) but bodies were mostly found above ground, with a fraction buried, so its assumed most were cremated, to prevent disease before burying them.

And the official reports claim 4million, so the question is, where were most of the bodies?
(Also the fact the places were under construction for so long, and not actually in full use until near the end of the war)

I should clarify.
I think the problem stems from mixed up numbers, and a need to figure out what happened.

Thousands died at the camps, like u said, where the #1 cause of death was lack of food/water. (Germans rationed the food for soldiers after food/water supplies were cut off.) The primary intended cause of death was most likely bullets.
When it comes to finding corpses, the number found, vs the number missing didnt match, so the theories went on from there.

The problem is, the numbers of missing people, vs the number of ppl found dead, i personally believe is just a mix up.
I couldnt explain why the mix up happened, as some suggest a game of telephone, but i think this is the reasoning why it turned out liek this.

The census for the number of jewish people in poland was around 6million people.
the number of jewish people found alive after ww2 in poland, was roughly just shy of 6million people.

the number missing, was roughly on par with the number of corpses found.
But the number of people missing from the census wasnt what was used to determine the number of killed jews.
The 6million number was used prior to the number of people being found. I have no idea what, ppl have made guesses, but most sound like just that, guesses.
