GF made calls everywhere locally, no vet locally will see him.
Said fuck it...we're driving out 2 hours away at 11pm to find the ONE vet that might see him to try and save my dude. I can't let my dude down. Omw to vet.

This is my dog Dieter. Had parvo when just a little puppy, super deadly to puppies. Low low rate of survival. Had to be in the vet for two days with an IV. Really really lucky we still have the little pup around

Sneezing, yes. We've had rats for several years, so we're used to the usual ailments they can have. But he just got sick today out of nowhere. Ours typically live a long time, and i've seen more than a few go but......this guy for whatever reason was my guy from the start. He's unusually cool for a small animal. I love the stupid asshole.
I'm not expert and I'm only on my first few rats, so idk.

I've had rats myself and know how wonderful they can be as pets.
Fingers crossed he's only dealing with the usual upper respiratory problems and its nothing serious for him user.
One of my rats ended up getting a giant tumour when I had them and had to put him down. Was such a hard thing to deal with and my heart goes out to you and your ratty

Leif has a mass growing next to his lungs. Its common amongst rats to have tumors. Could be a cist, could be something else, yadda yadda.

Leif got some meds. We're taking him to our vet we know tomorrow. He probably will have to be put down, but i'll have that done by someone who gives a shit about pets and that knows us, and in a better enviroment.
My dude is RIP no matter what though. Not going to keep him suffering. Comes at the worst time. He was the dumbest rat we ever had but he just loved to cuddle and chill. He'd break up fights with the others by just laying between them. He just wanted to snuggle and play in his ball pit.

Fake OP here. Genuinely sorry for your loss, user. My girlfriend had a couple of rats when we first got together, and one of the poor things got a nasty tumor on her stomach like a week or two after we got together. It grew so fast it was unbelievable. We had to have her put down, and gave the other up for adoption since my GF couldn't be around enough with work to keep her happy. I agree with the user that said to spoil the shit out of him and make him feel loved while you still can.
Yeah keep an eye on him, hes gonna be pining. When our labardor died, our cat would go from room to room looking for him, then sit in random places n the house and howl. Went on for months.

Rats generally don't live much longer than a year or a year and a half in terms of max age. They can succumb to any number of illnesses that an old mammal would get: stroke, mental decline, cancer, organ problems etc. sooooo.....thats something to consider.
Also, get a real pet that lives longer than a damn year. Rats induce a evolutionary response of revulsion from us for good reason, they're not rly pets.
I used to have some rats. Left home and couldn't take the last surviving of the family with me. I already didn't take good care of their cages. Couldn't rely on the family to do it omce I left. He choked on the fumes of his own piss. So should I.

More like two years, but I had a hairless girl live to be 4 and was pretty healthy despite having a huge mass that was the size of her body for most of her life (vet recommended to leave it be until it opened).

To OP. I think you are being a bit harsh about the veterinarian you saw. You brought your very ill pet to his office and he provided you with a diagnosis. It's not his fault that it is basically untreatable. Maybe his bedside manner sucked, but he did everything you asked of him. I am a vet, and in my observations, usually the docs who go into emergency medicine are the most highly skilled. Maybe a bit autistic tho. Sorry for your bad news.

I am the vet that responded to OP's post a couple posts ago. I told him he was being too harsh on the doctor. Now, you are being too harsh. He is taking the doctors advice, but just wanted one a little more quality time for and with his pet. I don't think Leif is probably in acute pain, just doesn't feel good. I think this is reasonable. I have euthanized thousands of pets in my 30 years of practice, including several of my own. Being in a familiar place with familiar people for this is a good thing.

I hope he makes it but you should realize that pet health care isn't super advanced and if you want them to actually try to find the reason he's sick and fix it it'll probably cost a ton of money, MRI's, X-rays, bloodwork, thousands of dollars. Just sayin. Sad but true. In fact it'll be at least $50 just to put him down. Many vets will hook you up if you're really poor though. They don't wanna see animals suffer.
