I almost have 30. I use them for competition, for hunting, self-defense, and recreation. Guns are far more specialized than most people think. You can own multiple handguns alone, for specific purposes. A "race" gun for competition would be different than a home defense handgun which would be different than a compact or subcompact gun for concealed carry.

Yes, 12 gauge. Recoil is fine. I only shoot 2 3/4 shells, not 3 inch magnums. 3 inch magnum slugs can hurt, but standard defensive 2 3/4 buckshot shells are totally fine and don't recoil near as much as people would have you believe. It's fine for home defense as long as you put a light on it. Any defensive gun for home defense needs a light so you can identify targets.

Traditional hunting shotgun that I modified (replaced the barrel) with a shorter 18 inch Remington blued barrel to turn into a police/riot style shotgun with the +2 extension on the tube magazine. Old Remington wingmasters are amazing and the blued finishes are clean.

They're snappier than the normal sized versions of the same model gun but not unmanageable in reasonable calibers like .380, 9mm and .40S&W. They feel and work the same as full-grip guns, they just leave your pinky to dangle. Most of them come with optional magazine extensions to add purchase for your pinky but adding that extra half-inch to grip length reduces concealability, negating the point of the shorter grip, which means in a lot of cases you may as well just carry a version with a longer grip anyway.

From there, find the caliber that you can shoot comfortably. No one shoots well within a week, so the hand interface is the most important part of defensive handgunning. Once it fits your hand, try some test shooting, if possible. Find what calibers work for you, what recoil you can manage. Good luck.

I carry a Sig P238. Gotta say even though it says a 7.5lb pull on the website, I’ve practiced with it enough it’s between 6.5 and 7lb now.
Even before breaking it in, it was a nice very nice factory trigger that didn’t effect accuracy or precision when shooting it at standard FBI statistics range (28 feet) for self defense situations, and was good out to 25 yards (max indoor lane distance).
A lot of mid to upper end mouse guns (.380s) have aftermarket replacement parts dedicated to them - Galloway, Tillamook Precision, etc.
The only problem I have is cost of .380acp ammo over 9mm.

Just to be devil's advocate, but I'm sure you're familiar with guns in general, specifically trigger pull, so you know what to expect.. and without checking price of aftermarket triggers, I'd reckon you can turn a $300 mouse gun into a $500 mouse gun; for that, I'd rather get something in 9mm with a lighter trigger and slightly better everything else.

Most drop in trigger kits are less than $75 or so for a precision kit. You have to do the same to 9mm factory triggers too, just saying.
The biggest advantage 9mm has is cost - it’s about 30-45% cheaper per box depending on what you’re getting.
At self defense engagement distances, performance is about the same, honestly.
My biggest suggestion for the one guy is go to your local gun range, and rent firearms that catch your eye. Try out ones that you might like to carry.

Except those are added for safety, much like a safety on a gun. They come standard no matter what model/make you buy.

I managed to hold off more then one person trying to force their way in. Honestly, I’m certain I would be dead if they managed to get in. They were not trying to hide the forced entry in an occupied apartment. I faked a call to 911 even though the phone was quite far away and they eventually abandoned the assault. Now if that shit happened I would make some nice peep holes for them. For some reason, people believe that a call to the police will save them. Pull weight is correctable. It isn’t difficult to polish off 2lbs, adjust a spring or in the worst case replace the trigger group. I’ve done all three to separate firrarms.

Well hiding it won’t do anyone any good. If you have kids the only right thing to do is to teach them. Hiding the firearm will certainly never allow them to respect it. Depend on state regulation for which you own it in. Florida its all good to use for just about anything as of 2014, buying it however is handled in a few different ways, your ether buying it with your class 3 permit or having it sent to a dealer to then be registered to you through forms & maybe even dealer fee's if they do that sorta thing.
