Cedric Alexander has a WWE contract due to his hard work. The fact that fans chanted “please sign Cedric” after his performance in the Cruiserweight Classic also really helped matters for him.
Since being called over to the RAW brand from 205 Live, it seemed like he was going to get a push. We previously reported that Paul Heyman is behind Alexander and wants to put a slow push behind him, however, Vince McMahon had other ideas.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Vince McMahon has called for Cedric Alexander’s burial. This should explain why AJ Styles has destroyed him so thoroughly and easily in their previous outings.

So it's not a waste if he doesn't catch on, and it's not as if there are a lot of better acts he's replacing.
