Why not both?

New Japan Pro-Wrestling, headed by Antonio Inoki, used Inoki's "strong style" approach of wrestling as a combat sport. Wrestlers incorporated kicks and strikes from martial arts disciplines, and a strong emphasis was placed on submission wrestling. Many of New Japan's wrestlers including top stars such as Shinya Hashimoto, Riki Choshu, Shinsuke Nakamura and Keiji Mutoh came from a legitimate martial arts background. All Japan Pro Wrestling, under the direction of Shohei Baba, used a style referred to as "King's Road." The "King's Road" or sometimes called "Royal Road" style was in large part derived from American wrestling, particularly the style of top wrestlers in the National Wrestling Alliance, such as Dory Funk Jr., Terry Funk, and Harley Race, all of whom wrestled for Baba in Japan. As such, "King's Road" placed a heavy emphasis on working of holds, brawling, and the storytelling elements of professional wrestling
>tanked gates as the champ
Care to extrapolate?
Okay, now what’s bushi road?
Bushiroad Inc. is a Japanese entertainment company producer of collectible card games and trading cards, publisher of mobile apps and games, promotional items and many other venues, which was founded in 2007 by Takaaki Kidani and is headquartered in Tokyo.
For me it's Kawada.
Okay, now what does IWGP stand for?
Kings Road is long story based matches with a big emphasis on psychology and long term storytelling, new moves being brought out in special occasions etc. It's mainly used to contrast with Strong Style, which are shorter more shoot-style matches.
The terms don't really apply any more. The current NJPW style is more of a mix between the two.

Do the old New Japan match have storytelling or they just fight?
Not much of a war when we destroy All Japanetty by simply existing.

>attendance down

console war is all about autism, and All Japoos are up there amongst the elite
That's like saying the Nintendo v Sega console war is still a thing. All Japan doesn't even really exist anymore.
...
Don't listen to the retarded marks.
Strong style is the gimmick of NJPW and Inoki. His whole thing was having the strongest style and testing it against other styles. Strong style is ideally a roster of all of the best guys from every style fighting and improving to show that their style is the best. NJPW haven't booked that gimmick in like 16 years.
King's Road is the name of the overarching stories revolving around the All Japan main event scene during its peak popularity.
They all happened to work stiff and do a lot of suplexes that drop you on your head, but they way they worked is the strong division type of wrestling, King's Road is the name of the series of matches and nothing else.
Not thread related but OP related. Who was supposed to be Tana's Pillar-mates back when he was on top?
NJPW fans keep talking about the Four Pillars of Heaven where 4 people carry the company but I only know Tana as one of the Pillars in his generation.
here ya go
reminder he was considered too dumb by Misawa and co to be handed management duties because of his accent
I thought Shibata was also a Pillar? Or was he supposed to be until he left NJPW?
The 4 pillars was AJPW during that time. Every era is different, ya mark.
New Japan had the three musketeers with Hashimoto, Chono and Mutoh and they tried to book a next generation version with Nakamura, Shibata and Tanahashi but Inoki went and Shibata went and they half heartedly replaced Shibata with Goto and then started using Makabe as a top guy and Yujiro and Naito were groomed to be the next aces.
Effectively you had a top 2 during that era in Tanahashi and Nakamura.
Quick question, is it true Yoshi Tatsu was supposed to be a main eventer or a pillar before he left NJPW for WWE?
For me, it's early czw
>Yujiro and Naito were groomed to be the next aces.
Yeeesh what happened to Yujiro?
No, you're thinking of Kenzo Suzuki.
He just got extremely lazy. He had a couple of good showings in the early-mid 2010s when he cared a bit, but has shows literally zero growth at all in like 10 years. Hes got a legit background too, but hes more comfortable taking falls and helping the new gaijin around town when they are new(according to Page in an interview).
Basically just an extreme case of laziness, watching him wrestle now is almost comical, because the crowd absolutely does not give one fuck about what he does.
He was supposed to be Nagata's successor (see 2006-2007 NJPW) and then he just left
Nothing, he just wasn't any good. Ever.
New Japan usually has their Three Musketeers instead of All Japan’s Four Pillars concept. This naming convention originated with Mutoh, Chono & Hashimoto as the trio of the 90s, though it was retroactively applied to the 80s trio of Choshu, Fujinami & Tenryu. The 2000s were set to be led by Nagata, Tenzan & Kojima before Kojima left for AJPW. Tana’s contemporaries were Nakamura and Shibata, but Shibata left wrestling early to work MMA.
There's the "he's lazy" shit retards say and there's the truth.
So, No Limit split and Yujiro went over because he had all the charisma and they were setting up the classic Heracles story push that Kobashi got over with and Omega is doing in AEW now for Naito as a generic baby face who does his best.
Yujiro joined Chaos, but was stuck in the midcard role because Nakamura had a new lease on life with his new, evergreen gimmick. Then Okada came in and the plans changed, then BULLET CLUB got over and they started pushing gaijin as top guys. Yujiro and Naito were getting the NEVER belt over at the time (it was new and they were the future stars, like the Under 30 belt Tanahashi always had in the glory days of Inokiism). Naito was put in a boring shitter spot and managed to get himself over via CMLL. Yujiro had already set up his pimp gimmick and just went all in with it, but the character required him to be nonchalant and nujapanlets confuse proper character work with being lazy because they are marks for random flippyshit. Yujiro joined Bullet Club and then got lost there when Omega turned it into the super friends club and he just settled into being an incredible jobber who takes finishes perfectly and never outshines his opponents so he makes them all look incredible. He isn't getting his run on top so he may as well establish the next top guys.
He's unironically the most based NJPW worker.
based Makabe
>work MMA
>work
Don't you mean 'get raped in'
As an e-drone, this is so fucking wild to me. Kenzo Suzuki and Yoshi Tatsu were supposed to be main eventers in NJPW but tried thier luck in WWE instead but failed to get over. What shitty luck they have.
is All Japoo's attendance really down from last year?
Poor Goto's the only one who hasn't won the IWGP heby belt in that pic.
voicesofwrestling.com
down 7%
might not seem like a lot but after a few years of solid growth with their formula its worrying. They need to break the ceiling they are on so they can get to DG/DDT size.
Putting him as one of the four pillars is a stretch, Nagata was a big part of that era.
Well they did not run Edion #1 this year after all
If you need video proof of user’s words here, I recommend watching Yujiro vs. Beretta from Destruction in Kobe 2017. Yuj was tasked with getting Beretta over as a heavyweight, and in the meantime decided to wrestle the match like a Triple Crown title match in the 90s. He breaks out every goddamn move and the crowd goes nuts.
Haven't those been on the decline in the last year or so?
Does All Japan still run the Budokan?
Yujiro is unironically a better wrestler than Naitard, but Naitard ultimatelly will still have went further because he was origianlly seen as Tana 2.0, and when the company sees you in a certain way, unless you massively drop a stinker and can't work, plans usually never steer course.
no. They grew in 2016 and 17.
are we really going to get into this? If Edion 1 would have helped why could they not fill Edion 2 even once? Why did they draw less over 2 days in Osaka than they drew last year in 1?
Goto was supposed to be the future at the time and even won the G1 Climax during his debut entry
It just went downhill from there and his G1 certification title match was held at a Pro Wrestling Love in Yokohama show for an All Japan event, and the "visiting" New Japan fans at the show barely showed up for it
Another reason to hate Trent the traitor. He's got the same ceiling in both NJPW and AEW but chose the latter instead after NJPW built him up as a solid threat.
Whoever made that atrocity of a picture should be flown to calcutta and forced to clean up the designated shitting streets as punishment.
typo lmao I meant that there were barely any New Japan fans that attended that All Japan show to watch Goto take on Mutoh for the title
Bro fuck off
Yujiro is cringe ans a shitter
Who cares
Moves are easy
He probably wasn't getting paid enough. Like legit, no Baretta was making a ton of money
That would be world-renowned comic book pro, wrestling fan, podcaster, and democratic socialist Aubrey Sitterson.
because nobody in the right mind thought Zeus was winning and Kento was getting his win back, and also the card sucks
Shitterson LMAO
lmao source?
The only ever good thing he did was push Kento.
but puro twitter love him because he has always been the contrarian choice rather than choosing the chalk answer of one of the 4 pillars
Ok? Thats the whole point? They used the CC to give Kento the win while champ instead of Elevating someone fresh(Nomura, Lee, even a super longshot like James). Now they burned through the Nomura defense and drew 1.3k with it(down 300 in Korakuen from the last Nomura defense btw), and hes back to square 1. Only credible fresh AJPW-signed challenger left now is Lee. Hes beaten Nomura twice, Shuji, Suwama, Zeus in a rematch. They are gonna have to resort to outsiders again very soon if he doesnt drop it to Lee. Lee also has to go through Suwama, KAI and Shuji to do it.
Just watched it, probably the best Yujiro match I've watched so far; it's a bit much to say they were going nuts though but they are quite hot for it at the end.
I actually dont watch All Japoo and i dont even know the roster hierarchy besides that Jake Lee is a shitter and should never be champion.
Yujiro had a great match with Styles in 2014 G1
Sorry homie but Kento ain’t losing he belt till he reaches V11. Expect Lee to lose once again as one of those defenses.
Lee definitely isnt great and his new gear is horrendous but his CC final against Kento actually drew equally as well as Kento vs Marufuji from last year. Him winning the Odo this year might actually get him super over, especially considering the guys he would have to beat to get there.
>the 80s trio of Choshu, Fujinami & Tenryu
All this talk of Yujiro and Akiyama, but those three never get enough love.
Contrarian choice would be Taue.
Oh fuck off. Bet you're eating up Okada vs Sanada for the 25th time.
Kento Simpahara is unironically what made me stopped watching All Japoo
based
>blackface Choshu
WHAT THE FUCK DID THEY MEAN BY THIS?
Both
The funny part is that they made two other Choshus in this line with a similar skin-tone to Tenryu. The super tanned version seen here was their “Powered World Champion” edition, and the only one that was sold in America.
Sorry, im a performance fighting chad only
I hate reading but this is based user

There is no one in New Japan who takes moves better than Yujiro unless you're a mark for overselling.
he's agreeing with you ya mark

>Japanese wrestling style where wrestlers hit themselves for real with minimal selling
I didn't call him a simp so obviously it was a friendly comment ya autist

Okay, now how about we combine them both
Have sex
That’s modern New Japan.
wake is watching 90s AJPW
woke is appreciating Riki Choshu and 80s NJPW
Kings Road
NJPW's current style, Strong Style Evolved, which is basically the two just smashed together.
Looking at a picture of Yujiro from like 6 years ago right after he betrays Naito and he's all fucking ripped and shit and comparing it to now is pretty fucking wild.
Yujiro's promo after last year's New Japan Cup first round loss is hilarious. He starts off in deep thought about how pimping has taken priority from his wrestling and where things went wrong for him. Then he ends by hugging Pieter and saying that pimping is priceless and that he wouldn't have it any other way.
When Yujiro betrayed Naito both were members of CHAOS though
>"glory days of Inokiism"
Yikes and cringe
Both were shitters anyway
isn't KAI in Dragon Gate?
Current New Japan is the ideal form of pro wrestling.
BASED
Okay, now why aren’t their titles just called NJPW and not IWGP?
Choshu is just a really tan guy
IWGP is the pretend governing body of New Japan. Now why they have that, I have no clue.
Then what's about All Japan?
Have the commentators ever even mentioned that? I can’t recall.
>NJPW = Strong Style
>AJPW = King's Road
>DDT = comedy gimmick
>Dragon Gate = lucha
>BJW = death match
What's NOAH style or gimmick?
Successor to King's Road due to how NOAH was founded I guess? Though there's probably not much lineage to it anymore since the new management came in.
what about hellboy?
Kek that's so fucking based. Pimps up, hos down
>ywn have grandpa choshu tell you stories

>retroactively applied to the 80s trio of Choshu, Fujinami & Tenryu
>Tenryu
Hey dumbass - Tenryu didn't work for New Japan in the 1980s. If you want a third musketeer to make your lie work, at least go with Vader.
I remember Tana saying the first three musketeers were Choshu, Fujinami and Inoki
I would agree but Inoki's prime was in the mid-1970s
...
Yeah, while the 70s belonged to him, Inoki was also a fixture in the 80s. He lost a bit more, but he was still the #1 face with Fujinami as #2 and Choshu as the top heel. The only other “musketeer” you could argue for is Tiger Mask, but he was obviously a junior.
based puro user on the indonesian fishing board
but user is indo too
As much as I like the Jr. division historically, you can't include a Jr. in a heavyweight promotion's core group. Even Liger at his peak was seen as a step below most heavyweights, and was jobbed out in his G1 appearances.
probably based as fuck
>tfw you remember how HUSTLE had this storyline where Kawada brought Taichi everywhere with him just to beat the shit out of him everytime he could
NJPW doesn't have a "style". Everyone is different.
>every main event goes 30+ mins
>different
They're still wrestling under a specific sort of style.
Yes.
huh?
At least they made more money I guess
I think them and noah should do joint shows to grow them both
no,only new japan
The best Kawada disciple is Based Masao Inoue though.
Imagine watching this no dimes 06-10 period YIKES
Based nu japanlet with the shitpost.
how will he go over always losing the big matches he's freaking 0-8 in iwgp title matches
0-11
This. There are junior legends, but I wouldn’t call any of them pillars of their respective companies. Hell, Baba didn’t even believe in a junior division, which is one way Misawa’s NOAH differed from All Japan.
Lowest IQ post in asp history
Part of me think Baba would've introduced juniors into AJPW had he lived longer. His last disciple was Kanemaru.
>Kanemaru
based drunk uncle Nobu
Why is Kobashi wearing purple instead of orange if that's All Japan era?
been meaning to check out King's Road for a long time now, where should I start?
June 8, 1990 - Misawa vs. Tsuruta
That's the match that launches an insane 90s All Japan scene, and all storylines pretty much come from this bout one way or another.
based, thank you. Any other big match suggestions from around there or should I just try to watch all the shows from that point on?
Watch what you can, but if you don't want a million matches, stick with the world/tag championship matches from this point through May 2000. That's when almost everyone leaves to form NOAH. It's a crazy decade.
Because black trunks kobashi was based as fuck and it was the height of his career I guess
Depends on the match. I rather watch Mutoh overall, but I don't know that I'd call him Strong Style even with his time in New Japan.
thanks man
Yamazaki was based. Shame he was never that popular.
Start with Jumbo vs Tenryu, Triple Crown, 6/5/89. It's like the prologue for King's Road.
>Part of me think Baba would've introduced juniors into AJPW had he lived longer.
What? All Japan had a Jr. Heavyweight division and Baba couldn't have cared less about it.
oh alright I'll start there since it's just a few months before the other suggestion. I downloaded all of AJPW's shit on xwt and xwt classic months ago, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Thanks!

The only Jr. Baba ever liked was Onita, who he saw as a son. Then Onita stopped being a traditional Jr. due to injuries and started being a hardcore wrestler, which Baba absolutely hated.

New Japan worked in groups of three. The original 3 Musketeers of NJPW were Hashimoto, Chono and Mutoh.
Tanahashi, Nakamura and Shibata were the new 3 musketeers, but Shibata “betrayed” the company and left, which made his return and eventual feud with Tanahashi so kino
How come New Japan haven't begin to make new Musketeers?
cool blog fag
New Japan eyed Nagata, Tenzan and Kojima as the future Three Musketeers, but then shit got ugly and they never hit those heights.
All three would eventually be IWGP Champion, but Nagata was fed to Fujita/Yasuda, Kojima left for All Japan at one point and Tenzan had a combined 197 days as champ (4 reigns and 2 successful defenses overall).
Personal opinion is that they’ve altered their mindset. Now they seem to be set on a four pillars concept, and being homegrown isn’t a limitation anymore. Okada is still young, as is White, and then you have Naito and Ibushi to round out their cornerstones. That’s not even counting Tana, who is still the most profitable star they have even at his age.
Also, they haven’t had much luck with heavyweight young lions recently. Kitamura would’ve been huge for them, but now the only heavyweight in the wings is Oka. I’m sure they hope Umino, Tsuji and Fredericks turn out to be special.
Right now, it's Okada, Ibushi and Naito. But Ibushi and Naito have a shorter shelf life due to age.
So if we're gonna pair Okada with someone near his age + strong booking, it would be Okada, SANADA and Jay White. Dunno if they'll ever pull the trigger on SANADA becoming a bonafide main eventer though so maybe his spot is open.
cool blog fag
Based /woo/tists schooling Yea Forumsies in this ding-dong diddly thread
That's what I'm thinking too. Not to mention Suzuki's gonna pass down his leader role in Suzuki-gun to someone (probably ZSJ) and he usually gets booked stronger than most. SANADA's also just 31 too.
Jay White is a good choice. I think he's gonna be the one who stays in NJPW for a long time (maybe even forever considering his home country is closer to Japan than US). Juice and especially Ospreay I think is gonna leave earlier than Jay.
I can’t see Juice renewing after his current contract is up. Ospreay signed a rare 5yr deal, so we’ll see what shape he’s in when that’s done.
I only really like King's Road if it involves Kawada, Kobashi, and Misawa.
Wtf really? That's surprising. I thought Ospreay was gonna gun for WWE/AEW after building up his stock. Didn't know he'd be loyal enough to sign for 5 years. Good for him then. Maybe they'll give him shots at the hebyq title.
That's a shame about Juice though. The Japanese crowd loves him.
As others have said, they have a new look version of the musketeers using outside talent. I'd be more concerned with the next wave, as I don't see anyone that comes across as a star in their crop of dojo lions (Japan/US/Fale). Kitamura was exactly the kind of talent they needed.

Narita is dimes.

NJPW drew bigger numbers

Preferably a heavyweight and not a shitter.
Taichi is too lazy to train anybody, but I’d like him to take Uemura under his wing.
That's easy.
Tenryu > Ishii.
