i believe it was caused by moral panic,and every other types of mass fear(it happens for a very long time(for example people shouldn't believe in round earth model in the past)),this is what happen when emotion is in conflicting state with logical thought

I think it's the influence aspect over everything, as it's mostly the news that spreads the narrative no so much the general public. Probably because they can see at least sub-consciously that they will lose their influence and then revenue if people starting subscribing to getting information off the internet and not going by the culture the media likes. It feels like old man yells at clouds with them, they scream and kick at useless stuff while ignore bigger issues because the smaller stuff threaten their influence and outdated culture
