I've got very mixed feelings about Dokkan. It has extreme variations in style and quality that aren't encountered in the earlier seasons. It's like every episode director was encouraged to do whatever he liked, regardless of the established style and pacing of the previous seasons.

On the other hand, it also has episode 40, which I consider the most perfect single episode in anime history. But even that one is exemplary for the director (Hosoda) freewheeling with the material and just doing his own thing.

Not really, I'm just an average ESL who wishes he could formulate his thoughts more economically. Whenever I have trouble getting my message across, my writing tends to become rather overworked.

totally agree. you can really see that gradual increase in creative freedom as the show goes on especially when you compare dokkan to s1. even from the beginning, the series was fairly distinct from other mahou shoujo of the time but s1 has a lot more episodes i would call formulaic; not necessarily bad but (relatively) much more in line with genre convention. Then you look at Motto/Dokkan and it's like night and day.
I figure sometime around sharp toei was just like 'ok we know you're our cash cow so as long as you shill our toys you can use your discretion' and the story just grew so naturally from there. and they used that freedom to bring on hosoda just so he could go nuts and do something as amazing and special as dokkan 40/49. then as you mentioned the regular episode directors each get to show their stuff in dokkan as well; just look at nagamine's ep13, oka's ep17, yamauchi's ep28, to name a few that stand out to me. each one of those is a totally unique distillation of each director's style and ideas.

Don't take what he says too personally. People around here are too busy to be polite, so if they have something negative to say, they'll say it quick and move on. Contrast that with the south where the smallest perceived slight is held onto indefinitely and that person forms a grudge against you that you'll be completely unaware of because no matter what you fucking do they just smile and "bless your heart" you like a complete fucking sociopath all the while gossiping about you to everyone they can to tarnish your reputation.
