I didn't watch any of the movies, I think I saw half of Freeza arc.

Frieza is the source of quite literally everything in the entire franchise. He is the reason why anything and everything can happen. He is the complete antithesis of Goku and, thus, the ultimate nemesis for our protagonist.

Cell is a literal who faggot who has absolutely zero impact on the overarching plot of the story. He has no relevance before his arc or after. He existed purely to get beat up by an autistic 11 year-old having a shitfit.

No one other than Toriyama thought it would be a good idea to feed their most organically over monster to a kid. But Goku was on his way out and they needed a new star ASAP. Cell, being the stand up lad that he is, went along with the booking despite the fact he knew it made no business sense. And to top it all off Goku returned a few years later making the entire thing pointless.

Gohan was carried by Cell, not the other way around. This is evident by the fact he hasn’t had a single good match since he went over.

The booking was built up since the start of Z and the Cell saga/subsequent Saiyaman mini-saga drew some of the best ratings DB ever did in Japan. It was worth it and it was ultimately just a change of pace to give someone other than the big MC a win and provide a memorable moment for another character.

Gohanetty needed a last minute spot with 16 to get over with the crowd. That shitter is such dime repellent that he was sent back down to the midcard almost immediately
