According to Bruce Prichard, Mark Calaway believed that fans wanted him to remain as the American Badass, and that returning to the Deadman style would be "a big step backwards". Prichard believed that fans wanted the old dark, gothic style back, but it took a while to convince Calaway to actually do it. In my opinion, the biker style was great because I fucking loved hearing him talk a lot. His promos were fantastic in that era, but I think that he was even better in late 1999, when he was still in between the Ministry gimmick and ABA. He did a lot of talking, but he still had a very evil, deathly vibe about him.
