I've got like 6 things I'm getting ready to ship out. But if that's too many, I can always try to....."tone" it down ;) really though, is 6 too many or am I ok?
Well I've been preparing since the last albume release so that's why there's so many. But even if they were le rubbish or not, the quality doesn't matter. These albumes are the collective of esforts getting together to make a kewl piece of art that not only embodies the board's culture, but also acts as a time capsule for what the people on the board were like on [current period of time for current albume]. So considering that, its le rubbish-ness is ultimately unimportant.
whatever you say jaq but the truth is that no one cares about the songs that aren't good and even in the future people will just ignore the bad ones and reflect on the good ones as if they were the only remnants of that time period. It's the same with real music tbqh...

You're not wrong at all! I mean, that's the case now with music from the 60's and 70's. So many people have this tunnel vision about how music's not like it used to be, but really we're only looking at the good stuff from those periods.
And that'll be the case for the albumes too, and that's ok. These albumes capture a lotta different characteristics about the board, and in a lot of unique ways. The immense variety in song styles is what brings the albumes to life, not any individual one, no matter how good.
OWO it's le ruse bird I can't le believe it Considering jaq is a QUALITY poster he probably also makes nice music hmmmmm

Trackers are simple music making tools that mostly work with samples, there are hundreds of them and 99.9% are free.
Basically you load bunch of samples (.wav files) into a tracker program and input notes into a grid. When you play the song it goes from up to down in the grid and plays any notes that you've entered in your chosen sample. For example if a note value is attached to a .wav file of a piano sound, it will play that piano sound in the note you want.
Then you can add effects in the grid that the program computes in real-time, for example you can make a sample slide up or down in pitch or alter its volume.
The program saves the whole thing as a file called "module".
Trackers are very easy to get into. Few are designed for professional audio production use. I would recommend MilkyTracker or OpenMPT for a beginner. There are bunch of tutorials on YouTube.
Fuggin BASED post. To add on to this, SunVox is good too if you want something with a more modern interface. It also looks pretty kewl too

don't wanna be that guy but i think it sounds a bit weird. like when you think of the spikes going against the floor it kind of makes sense but i'd imagine that the bottom part of his body is flat with maybe some small feeties or something...idk my personal thoughts
Thank you for the criticism, I honestly really appreciate it. I've been sorta on the fence on how to approach it too, and that was the reason I posted it on here in the first place. I'm not sure if I'll do tiny footsteps cause I feel like that'll be too ambiguous, and I want it to be, like, immediately clear that it's the Spikeman crossing the stage when people hear it.
I used a sample of broken glass for that sound before, but this time I'm gonna try editing the sound of a long broom sweep and see if that'll work better LOLE. Again though, thank you
Aiden Rodriguez
yeah actually a broom sweep sounds like it might fit right, goode luck jaq!
Honestly, if you're new to this try out the freeware suggestions by other nicefigs to learn the basics. I, for one, still think that Ohmstudio is a good start for freeware DAWs because it's quite intuitive. If you like this hobby you'll be dumping much nicemonies into equipment and software/samples, so better check out Cubase, Ableton or Logic X too and see what suits you best beforehand.
Another approach would be to get a vpn and search the .RU NET for torrent trackers
How do i get started in music theory? Are there any essensials that you need to know when making music? I mainly know basics, like: the music sound good if its in a key there are triads/chords that sound fricking cool and can be minor or major, there also can be larger chords (that i know how to make) and suspened chords that are just more tension oriented chords that the melody should travel from/to keys in chords that bassline sounds good when its on a root note i grasp the concept of root notes (its just the base note of the chord i dont know much about songwiting, interest curves, tension and release i know my daw just enough to make music but i still lack theory and i want to post something for this album so i dont have time to read books about it (but it would be also amazing if you would tell me some good titles) pls help i want to contribute
Basically, the vast majority of music is just a big ol' dance around this here "Circle of Fifths" (pic related) Since the root is considered the 1st scale degree, or "home", a fifth refers to the 5th scale degree, or 4 scale degrees (or 7 semitones, since you're using a daw) up from the root, in a major/minor scale. The circle of fifths is what happens when we constantly stack fifths on top of each other (G is the fifth of C, D is the fifth of G, A is the fifth of D, etc, until we come all the way around to C being the fifth of F and then we start over)
So why does this matter? Basically, how we move around the circle of fifths will determine the kind of effect our music will have. If you play chords going COUNTERCLOCKWISE (Gmaj - Cmaj - Fmaj - Bbmaj, etc) Then the music will sound like it's constantly resolving or "breaking down", while if we go the opposite direction (Bbmaj - Fmaj - Cmaj - Gmaj, etc) it'll do the opposite, and sound like it's constantly building itself up and creating tension. Obviously, we don't have to ONLY go one direction or the other with our chords, since we can go from ANY chord to ANY OTHER chord. If we do that, then, in a 4 chord progression using ONLY basic major and minor triads, we get 12000+ different possible chord progressions. And that's not even counting major, minor, suspended, and dominant 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, diminished chords, augmented chords, and so on. So there are an ABSURD amount of possibilities To help narrow these down, thats why we have the major and minor scales. (Sidenote: Interestingly, if you stack fifths from F to B, we get the entire C major scale.)
Here are the chords for the C major scale Cmaj(I) - Dmin(ii) - Emin(iii) - Fmaj(IV) - Gmaj(V) - Amin(vi) - Bdim(viio)
If you don't understand the roman numerals, the number indicates the scale degree. Uppercase = major Lowercase = minor (cont)
OK I won't say too much more since I don't want to overload you with info lole
Now that you have your major scale chords, you can experiment around and find things that you like. If you want to go around the circle of fifths like I was talking about before, you can. Start from Amin and play Amin(vi) - Dmin(ii) - Gmaj(V) - Cmaj(I), and you'll get a chord progression thats really common in classical music. Then of course, you can go the opposite way with Cmaj(I) - Gmaj(V) - Dmin(ii) - Amin(vi) to get a progression that kinda sounds like it would work in pop music.
But you can also experiment with different chord movements too! One that I really like is Dmin(ii) - Fmaj(IV) - Amin(vi) - Cmaj(I), which just moves up 2 scale degrees with each chord.
Anyways, I hope at least some of this helped, and tell me if you have any questions with any other stuff
okay it's been a week and this thread has had 0 good contributions, truly and honestly the worst album...

Hello again 3bard!!! I stopped namefigging a lel while ago but i'll bring it back, just for you :DD Excited to bring some more nicer newerer music for the albume!!!
big music theory nerd here ok so bascially in any key you can refer to the chords by roman numerals as jaq has very nicely explained tension and release is created on the assumption that each chord is designated a specific function, called functional harmony the most common resolution is a V7 (dominant seventh) - I (major tonic) and has been around for yonks, since the time of bach and probably earlier. this is called a perfect cadence there are other resolutions, such as IV - I, which is a plagal cadence, but a perfect cadence is generally the strongest and feels the most complete this V - I progression is typically extended to ii - V - I, especially in jazz (but is used friggin' everywhere), where the ii functions to build up tension HOWEVER these tension and release thingies are mainly reserved for genres where non-cyclical chord progressions are common, i.e. jazz or classical music. if yu listen to much of pop music today it is centred around 4 chords that just loop over and over and over and over again with maybe one or two dominant chords that resolve back to the tonic to assist a build up to a chorus or whatever. pop music uses a thing called “retrogressions” which basically aim to shift between chords with minimal tension. a very common progression is I - V - vi - IV. it uses the dominant, however it functions very differently from resolution; instead of resolving V to I, it goes from I to V, thus actually distancing itself from the tonal centre. it loops back with IV, using a plagal cadence, so that we can still ‘feel’ the key centre but not with something as strong as a V7
Anthony Martinez
(parte two) now of course you can combine chords in all sorts of wacky ways. on the topic of extensions now. extensions generally are used to simply add colour to a chord progression, however when you start using more outlandish progressions (e.g. key modulations) extensions are increasingly used to ‘tie’ the chords together if the composer wants it to be as smooth as possible and not jarring to the listener. chord inversions, where a chord’s notes are ‘shuffled’ around (e.g. C - E - G, a cmaj chord in root position, could be E - G - C, a cmaj chord in first inversion), are similarly often used to connect chords together functionally. lots of people slap a gazillion extensions on any old chord and think it makes it sound amazing. in reality, extensions should be used appropriately with maximal closeness to each other. onto melodies now. to write melodies, you have to make sure it fits in the chord youre writing it over. you dont necessarily have to stick to the only notes in the chord because our brains recognise it as an extension of the chord; for example, a D over a cmaj chord would still sound good because our brains would recognise it as a major ninth, and a B would function as a major seventh. however, if you added a C# over a cmaj chord, it wouldnt sound good because C# is miles away (harmonically speaking) from cmaj.
tbh I like making my own songs but I don't want to put them here on th album for personal reasons. Maybe in future, idk tbh

I've started figuring out the songs for my medley from listening to them. The first song in the medley is great, but the second may be a bit off. It's just the bleep-bloopy stuff that's hard to be sure of.
I'm gonna play the whole thing on my electric piano and record it onto my iPhone voice memo app. I'll then put it on iTunes on my computer and email it.
It will be difficult to get a good take because there are some backing parts that need to be recorded using the electric piano's recording system, so I'll need to use a metronome and actually write the extra layers of the music on a sheet or something, which I'm bad at. It'll be hard to keep in time, stopping and starting, as the extra stuff is only for some songs.
The medley will end up with 9 songs, I hope. I've so far figured out the first 2 and a tiny bit of the 5th and 6th. Luckily, the seventh song will likely have some sheet music on the internet somewhere, I should hope.
songs 4, 5, 6 and 9 will likely be the hardest to get right. Especially 9. The 1st suffers from a similar difficulty, but I was able to overcome that, miraculously. If I can do it once, I can do it 4 more times!
I may be forced to cut some songs out of the medley if they're really tricky, but I really like all of them. I want to keep them all tbh.
The 1st song in the medley will take about 35 seconds, and the next one about 30, so I estimate the whole thing will be about 5 minutes. I want to stick out from the crowd with this ultimate celebration of [s4s]!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Maybe at some point I'll do a cover of i'll b ur gf, but not for this album! :)))))))))))))))))

I've finally broken through the first song. It was super hard to tell what was going on, but, now that I know, I should be cruising through to the 4th song of the medley.
Once all 9 are sussed, it's just a matter of recording into my Electric Piano, and then playing along to the recording, and then getting it onto my computer.
I'm liking this a lot, very spooky and the way the bass seems to subtly shift in tone over time is a really kewl and unsettling touch. maybe it's the mother 3 pad and the cover art that's making me think this, but I really feel like this music would fit very nicely as the background music for Moonside in Earthbound. Super nice and I can't wait to hear more stuff from you :)
Thank you very much my're fren, I've been trying to clean it up more lately and possibly resubmit it cause the other night all the instruments n junk seemed very clear, but now that I've given it some time it seems kinda muddy. I might try to make an extended version sometime later though!
you're spot on about the moonside connection! i used the palette when i drew the cover; i also listened to all the stuff on your soundcloud and im really impressed with how you connect all those chords together to make melodies; something i cant really do yet as im just starting out, ocean walkers and beak 2 bread for example are my favs.
Decided to experiment a little on this one. If it sounds like it's being played on an old radio, then I've done my job right. If not, then fuck, I blow.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but that's honestly pretty friggin awesome, and thank you very much fren, that means a lot. Though I'm gonna update the birdeat one soon with a cleaner mix!
The song is damn fine on its own, especially those fuggin drums DANG son, but I don't get the impression that it's playing from an old radio, but you do NOT blow. If you really want that old radio kinda sound, just use a tight bandpass filter on the midrange, and then maybe give it a little reverb too so it sounds like it's coming from the other side of the room or somethin. You could ALSO try adding a vinyl crackling sound (not affected by the bandpass filter) like this: youtube.com/watch?v=41lrxMvhBdc I know that's more for vinyl, but nobodies gonna tell the difference if you use it
.gif: SAVED By the way, now that you mention it, your song really reminds me of this cutscene from Mother 3 where t
Thank you frens, I'm glad that feeling could translate over well. Gonna try to clean it up a little more, but I'll make sure to preserve that dreaminess/loneliness of it. Again, thanks
very nice harmonyes fren........ maybe i am feeling inspried to make bury comfie ! beginning synth kinda sounds liek Owen Wilson LOLE but ya... sounds sleepy like town vidya gaem music or somethin je ne sais quoi my onley feed back would be to maybe change the melodie synth 2 something else for a section so theres more variation or maybe contrast between the sections of the track lole...
I did use a vinyl effect, guess I didn't make it obvious enough.
I rejigged a load of the effects, and added some static sample behind it. I spent literally 2 minutes because I need to go out rn so it may be rough around the edges, but hopefully sounds more like you want. I had also used a bandpass, but the effect was turned down while I edited some of the notes, and didn't go back in.
o shid I have to actually release the final version ow my song now gimme a bit but it'll be out and ids a bjanger although it actually sucks and I have no idea how to mix nor how to master but shhhhhh nice board right?
I'm honestly really sorry for waiting almost 50 entire years to respond back, but I like it man! At first I thought the static was a little too overbearing, but I feel like my ears adjusted quickly and I think it works really work, plus Vocaroo does this stupid thing where it converts all uploaded audio to mono so its probably perfectly fine in stereo anyway. Another thing you could do (in case you still wanted to work on it some more) is to put a SUPER SLIGHT lfo on the entire track's pitch so it sounds like the radio is wearing down as it plays it
I meant works really well not works really work xdddd mega epic FAIL
If you don't want to shell out money for styrofoam panels, you could honestly just use a cheap stereo recorder and record under a bunch of blankets and not many people will tell the difference between that and a professional studio recording.
Or wait, unless you're recording drums, then that's a BAD idea, but stuff like guitar or singing should be fine

How to sing?
David Mitchell
Basically you gotta breath out FAST but also move your throat and tongue in funny directions and maybe give ur neck a flick or 2 to kickstart it....at least that's how the pros do it idk. Really though if you're gonna try to sing and you're not used to it, try to use your diapraghhgmgm so it'll not only sound better but also be less likely to hurt your throat. If you're not sure how to use your diaphragm, stand up straight with your back against a wall and it should be a lot easier when you try to sing, but if for some reason ur in a wall-less area, just make sure you're upright. You'll kinda feel it around your stomach when you do it right
