I know you just started watching NJPW because of Young Bucks clips on reddit but NJPW never has had the traditional binary face / heel roles. Everyone is a tweener to some extent, even Tana. That's where half the match drama comes from.

Man, Naito is in a really weird place. He was the most over guy in the company for a while but they didn't pull the trigger on him because of Omega and Okada so he was just super over for a while and then it dissipated. He has the IWGP IC title now so he's essentially upper midcard. That could change this G1 but I doubt it. Ibushi is the star this G1 and outside of him they have too many younger guys like Ospreay and White they need to get over.
