what was the appeal of Sting besides the edgy facepaint? he had mediocre wrestling ability and was TERRIBLE on the mic. he had as much charisma in/out the ring as somebodies dad
What was the appeal of Sting besides the edgy facepaint? he had mediocre wrestling ability and was TERRIBLE on the mic...
Hey he wasn't just edgy facepaint! He also had a bat!
mainly for my older brother he said it was the fact that he was someone who was a vigilante but he in fact was an edgy man child that beat up people for the sake of beating up people
product of the time.
Watch Sting vs. Cactus Jack at Beach Blast 1992.
he's basically hipster/indie undertaker
>edgy facepaint
Surfer Sting was the top guy in WCW and I wouldn't call that gimmick edgy.
watch his feud with the nWo and Hollywood Hulk Hogan
>mediocre wrestling ability
18+ board
Repent zoomer
this board is 18+ kiddo
Sting was best as Surfer sting
He was a good backstage presence and he got over.
>edgy look
We're all products of time man.
Surfer > Joker > Crow
>Unironically one of (arguably THE) greatest wcw champ of all time
>Whats so great about this guy?!
What's so great about the rock, Steve Austin, Goldberg, and undertaker? They had cool gimmicks and niches that appealed to the audience, you mong.
>Surfer Sting was the top guy in WCW
Alright so what's the appeal of Sting post 1996?
That question could be asked about any great wrestler who stayed past their prime. Not everyone is Shawn Michaels, putting on bangers even at his retirement match, so they ride on nostalgia.
He's the biggest anti-hero babyface gimmick you fucking brainlet
>he had mediocre wrestling ability and was TERRIBLE on the mic
Zoomer nig detected
Austin is the biggest anti-hero babyface you retard.
We're talking WCW shitstain
>wait for a movie with a popular character in face paint
>ape that character for your gimmick
>repeat until you have a hall of fame wrestling career
Sting is truly the greatest of all time.
He would have been a HOFer even if he remained as surfer Sting
Better matches as Surfer but the look didnt age well
No we're not. The question was what the appeal was. Not why he was big in WCW. Why was he big in TNA? Why was he treated as a big deal in WWE?
Surfer Sting has some great matches. Even Crow Sting has the one vs DDP in '99, love that match.
Anyway, Sting coming down from the rafters, being the lone guy vs NWO, the Crow facepaint, being silent and all that, it was cool in the '90s. Not sure what else is really needed.
My first wrestling memories are Surfer Sting stood on a balcony with one of his jackets on, and Marc Mero and his confetti canons. So comfy
>not enough flips
>not enough highspots
>not enough false finishes
>BAD WRESTLER
It's called the "it" factor and it's something workrate indy faggots will never have
Just an all around energy about that made you wanna cheer him. Then he fell into bad times and his friends even didnt trust him, but you as a fan did, you knew sting cared for Wcw and was a good guy and he came back as this silent avenger, it was dope, it was cool to see him just being so relentless and fearless against Nwo.
I dunno what it is about him, its just a hero kinda. You always wanted to cheer for him. He is a lot like Hogan, im that he is just a classic top guy without a doubt.
Kek. Match of the century. 10/10 year long build ends with a botch, a hogan power play and sting looking a chump needing help
Vague but true. Sting has the ultra-rare babyface gene.
sting was always cool except when he was talking
People are forgetting the context of it. Not surprising since this shit happened 20 years ago.
Look the angle revolved around the NWO turning baby faces that would like to be a heel to join them. Hogan set the precedent as did Macho Man, Bagwell, Bischoff and others coming in.
The whole thing revolved on when would Sting do it. So when the fans are expecting it, his character shifted from “supported by fans” to “doubted by fans”. His character trait revolved around feeling betrayed by us.
And what he does is NOT wrestle at all. He builds himself an air of mystery, changes his look, test people with his bat to know if “Will you also attack me, like they did?” as a test and interfere in high profile matches all the time.
By the time Hogan finally has him face to face everyone wants to know what the fuck he wants.
Then he comes out with the NWO shirt on. Everyone loses their shit. Then he rips it like Hogan does and they lose their shit again.
It was great character work at the time with a huge payoff.
35+
To be fair hardly any wrestler has the it factor. There's usually 2 or 3 a decade with it. Late 90s was so good due to the fact that there was like 7 guys with it.
this, 7 year old me thought sting was the coolest fucker in the world
>not everyone is shawn michaels
that's true some wrestlers can draw
