Dusty never wanted Cody to become a wrestler. Also, Cody grew up with a fucked up home life where he had to deal with him and his mom dealing with Dusty's fucked up relationship with his half-brother Dustin.... who passively aggressively hated Cody because Dusty apparently told someone that Dustin and his mom were his "starter marriage/kid" and that he was going to actually be a "proper husband and father" to Cody and his mom. And that this comment got back to Dustin when Dustin was going through his own divorce and basically became a huge elephant in the room that Dusty purposely didn't try and make his first marriage work/be a good father to him.

Also, there is the fact that Dusty died right in front of Cody and that the hospital neglected him while he was in his care. And that Cody's career was basically DOA at the time his father did die, and he was stuck dressing up like Mr Sinister and talking like a comic book villain and stuck in a tag team with his half-brother, because the company had no idea what to do with him and would never give him a chance to be a main event guy like his dad was.
