There's a segment of Awesome's shoot interview on Youtube where he said Paul promised him a huge raise and just kept delaying his cheque, dude had a family and a house and couldn't pay for shit and WCW was offering him money up-front. It was a no-brainer. Styles was probably just working the old angle though, it's never sounded like he had any real heat with 'the boys', just the fans.

nah, styles was great in ECW specifically because he was a complete shitter, which gave the broadcast a gritter, more "underground" feel. He objectively sucks at everything except recognizing and naming moves quickly.

He's a pretty good commentator outside of ECW and did amazingly well in WWE. I still wished he could still broadcast with Impact, AEW or ROH since many of'em pissed at Gabe Saposky and Haitch.

June 12 2005 - Joey Styles calls ECW One Night Stand, Mike Awesome has a match with Masato Tanaka in which Mike performs a suicide dive manouveur. Styles was presumably working the old angle of Awesome having heat within ECW since he left for WCW and he quipped “It’s a shame he didn’t succed in taking his own life.”
Feburary 17 2007 - Mike Awesome commits suicide via hanging that Joey Styles was unfortunate enough to foreshadow.
So yeah Joey probably didn’t know that Mike had commited suicide when he made the comments, but that is largely due to the fact that Mike wouldn’t kill himself until like a year and a half later.
When Mankind took the HIAC bump and King said “That’s it. He’s dead.” It would of looked a lot worse if Mick actually had died.

Okay, but what if Mick had died BEFORE the infamous Hell In A Cell match in 98? The call by JR would’ve been in VERY poor taste. That’s the point I’m getting at with Joey. It wasn’t in poor taste because he didn’t know that Mike had killed had done suicide until after the show. Had he known before the show and still made that call, it would’ve been a PR nightmare.
