My understanding is that after he came back from Japan and decided it was shit and he didn't like travelling, he started and maintained a successful business (I think he was maybe involved in IT or something?) and he didn't personally need pro wrestling, so he just did it for fun, went hard while he could, tried to give fans the kind of shit he would want to see.

For real though, he was just a guy who believed in the old ways, maintaining kayfabe, treating pro wrestling with respect, wins and losses matter, protecting his gimmick, etc, similar to how you might imagine someone like Shibata or Vader might've been. His whole thing was that he was all about "smashing faces", and giving the middle finger to the pussy shit wrestling had become. He worked really tight and made a point of FORCING the audience to mark out by doing stuff that made you think he was going to kill someone in every match by dropping his opponents on their heads or stomping on the faces etc, and he was really, really good at it.
The truth is that he was just really passionate about pro wrestling and really loved it actually, and although it looked like he was dangerous to be around, nobody has ever complained about him being unsafe as far as I'm aware and he never injured anyone. He also helped a lot of young guys get a start in the business and put all his friends over. I think working with him must've been like working with Samoa Joe or Low Ki at the time, like people knew what he was all about, and that it was gonna maybe be a rough match, but that was his style and that was the challenge, and they were gonna beat each other up and give 100% and send the fans home with their jaws on the floor.
He also was an AMAZING heel who was not afraid of being a real heel like the Terry Funk days, like to really get heat you have to punch a woman and spit on a baby type heat.
He was one of the last of a dying breed. He worked everyone. The whole point of his style and his character was to make us say "what was his fucking problem?" and it worked, everyone got worked by how much of a cunt his character was and how violent he came off. That's why he was great. There's basically nobody left in pro wrestling who gets that reaction anymore.
