Stop having face and heel commentators, they're now there solely to comment on the match and announce what's coming up. Do not allow Vince to give them talking points ever.

I think the product is too sanitized to properly "fix" commentary. I don't actually hate Cole that much, but just to use him as an example, he comes across as such a shill on the air. He has to be, but it's hard to connect with the commentary when their lines are always toeing the corporate line.
As a result, the best moments on commentary are always when Graves gets Cole to laugh on air. It's something actually genuine.

My #1 rule for commentary would be to never act like the product is anything less than the best thing that's ever existed. If the commentators aren't invested in what's going on in front of them, why should you be? You can say that a heel is lame, but you should never say that his match is lame or that his segment is putting you to sleep. Get over this idea that the line between shoot and kayfabe needs to be blurred. The fans do not think that what they're seeing is real. Give them an entertaining piece of fiction. If people are bored, do everything that you can to guide the product towards being exciting, including having the commentators being excited. The commentators should not be trying to convince the audience that they should be bored.

This is what Michael Cole does and it's one of the biggest critiques for the guy, because his reactions are not genuine.

To be fair . Watch the 1st UK tournament. You can tell he had freedom and was better for it.

Michael Cole is a black hole of charisma with a generic PR guy voice who's performance feels mailed in no matter what he does. This wasn't his calling.

Look at what JR used to do. He was there to convince you that the faces were strong and brave, that the heels were cowardly and cruel, that what you were watching was either a strong technical show or a brutal, high impact brawl (BAAAWW GAWD HE JUST BROKE HIM IN HALF), and that the conflicts mattered. In short, first and foremost, he was there to get the product over with the fans. He contributed to making you feel like you were watching super heroes and super villains fight it out in that ring. I couldn't see JR declaring that something was boring, because that would mean that the fans should be bored, and they most definitely shouldn't be.

To clarify, I mean calling matches or segments boring. Lance Storm or Chris Masters can be boring, but the product shouldn't be.

JR wouldn't flat out lie, though. If something was clearly fucked up, he'd call it as if it were. Obviously never saying something like "Whelp, the clod botched that spot!" Usually just called it an ugly version of whatever it was supposed to be, or something similar. A commentator has to retain some credibility, and not just come off like a mark.

Yeah, she was a great backstage interviewer. About the only one besides Charly who didn't come off like a lost retarded child. I prefer Charly, because she is absolutely 11/10, but Renee was actually better at the job. So, naturally, this fucking idiot company had to take her from something she was good at and move her to something she is the drizzling shits at.
