So what's your favorite of these matches, user? Can Kenny Omega's 2017-2019 run be considered among the greatest runs of all time? Any of these you disagree with and if so, why? What other matches do you feel should be up on this list?
Ospreay vs Takagi is probably my single favorite match of all time. I hate to pick something so recent but everything about it was so fucking perfect right down to the post match promo and interview.
Jack Nguyen
His ratings mean absolutely nothing since he just decided LMAO TIME TO GO BEYOND 5 CAUSE IM A WEEB
That's not a list of the greatest matches that's just a list of the things that Meltzer likes to masturbate too.
Blake Sanders
No he didnt He retroactively bumped up the numbers after he gave that 6
Mason Hughes
He is actually extremely good and memes aside is in the conversation for greatest performer of all time. Not my stance, but hes in that group.
Zachary Campbell
tanahashi vs omega from wk13 and omega vs okada from g1 2017 weren't even 5 stars tier
Blake Cook
Thats the main reason people like him. I dont care for his gimmick and his promos are goofy, but he really can make his matches something you get emotionally involved with, specially watching it live or stream
Mason Martinez
You dont even have any of the All Japan Womens matches Dave gave over 5 stars to ya simp. Or Flair vs Steamboat. Im assuming you're a zoomer?
Jordan Murphy
what did you expect? most of the american aew/njpw fans started watching other promotions than wwe back in 2017 thanks to the 6 stars meme
Brandon Sanders
As far as in ring work goes Omega is possibly one of the best. Walks the line the best of high spots without going full flippy shit. His promo work is mostly garbage though and he could never become as big as he has if not for being in Japan. Also Okada is better than Kenny is every way
Parker Cook
Not OP but he gave Flair Steamboat 5+ which doesnt really give it a solid placing.
And everyone keeps mentioning the women's match but I have literally never seen that actual rating outside of other people telling me he did it
Angel Morales
>Benjamin v. Micheals - Gold Rush Tournament on RAW - 5/2/05 >Goldberg v. Lesnar - WM 33 >Asuka v. Cross Last Woman Standing - NXT 6/28/2017 >Omega v Okada III - G1 - 8/12/17 >Ibushi v Tanahashi - G1 - 8/12/18
They are both pretty good, but almost all of the pretenders that have started using their style are garbage and don't get it a bit. Cole and Gargano are huge offenders. No one would ever think they were watching two guys actually fight when seeing those two. Same with Ospreay. Mox is unironically better than all of them
Angel Murphy
They are midgets but I havent seen them do flips. In fact, I think they are boring just for that, smaller guys should just fly around with no purpose.
Tyler Sanders
this a very good match. but dave has not watched it
Jack Scott
He's about as good as Dynamite Kid. Great acrobatics. Nice knees. Not a great seller or storyteller.
Easton Rodriguez
Sex. Have it.
Jace Sanchez
He sucks le meltz off for his special snowflakes
Mason Torres
Lol I've seen literally one of those
Grayson Cruz
I've never seen a fan of Japanese and indy wrestling ever that wasn't pure onions. Lots of cool E fans, though.
Easton Watson
Where is Okada vs Shibata, also top kek at the Johnny Gargano vs Adam Cole being rated higher the 2000's NOAH, the 90's AJPW and All Japan womens matches.
Owen Murphy
>14 of these 15 matches happened in the last three years Are we going through a boom period in terms of match quality, or is Dave just full of shit?
Adrian Cox
based filter going over this brain dead simp
Camden Cox
It's only a 5 star match. according to dave
Adam Anderson
Most of them don't fucking matter. Who gives a fuck about "muh matches" if the angle that led up to them wasn't great. The match is the fucking cherry on top of the story that got them to it and Dave has 100 percent forgotten this.
To be fair to Dave, with Okada vs Shibata, I think you're all looking at it in retrospect. At the time, the match was 5 stars because he didn't know about the hematoma and what happened to shibata after the match. Retroactively, that match is definitely 5+ stars but I can understand why Dave's keeping it at 5 instead of bumping it upwards.
Omega is good, but he's nowhere near "the best of all time", the only reason he's so many times in that rank is because he's a close friend of memeltzer
Jonathan Diaz
The big feuds, the character development, the story telling and the angles are so much better in NJPW that your comment expose you as a simp E-drone
Owen Lopez
I've don't even know any of these people, let alone watch a single one of their matches
New Japan storylines are all the same shit and the production is shitty. They don't have a based Kevin Dunn to make the kino cuts we get in the E.
Daniel Gonzalez
People will fall for this shitty bait.
Matthew Sullivan
The sad part is most of the E-drones unironically think that.
Parker King
I don't have any problems with Okada/Omega being at the top of that list, but ever since he broke the scale with the first Okada/Omega WK11 match, we've seen this crazy elevation of matches that don't belong there *cough*Garganovsanyone*cough*.
Ospreay vs Takagi is probably MOTY so far, but it isn't in the same league as Misawa/Kawada. I mean, I guess it's literally not in the same league, but it's just not the same.
Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada, Wrestle Kingdom 11 is still the greatest wrestling match I've ever seen.
Jace Adams
1/2 6
Carter Gonzalez
Extremely talented in the ring. Has a decade long story done with Ibushi that was masterfully crafted between the two. A great in-ring storyteller with call backs that go years and years back. Can do any type of wrestling from grappling, to strong style, to high flying, to hardcore, to comedy, he can do it all. A good promo in English AND Japanese.
His only fault is that he's a bit corny, but that is because he's a nerd.
Eli Hughes
I have no respect for this old man's taste.
Kenny vs okada Tokyo dome sucked. Kenny vs tanahashi Tokyo dome sucked. He didn't even rate any RVD match 5 stars so he's a complete fag in my mind
Also hes so insanely biased nowadays because ehe realizes how much power he has with it. I mean Cody vs juice 3 stars? Cmon
Also what'd he rate mox and juice?
Christian Brooks
Takeover XXV
Matt Riddle pinned Roderick Strong in 14:41. - 4.5
Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) won a four-way ladder match over Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler, Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch and Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly - 4.5
Velveteen Dream retained the North American title over Tyler Breeze - 3.75
Shayna Baszler beat Io Shirai to retain the women’s title. - 4
Adam Cole beat Johnny Gargano to win the NXT Title - 5.25
BOSJ Final
Jay White pinned Hiroshi Tanahashi - 4
Jon Moxley pinned Juice Robinson to win the U.S. title. - 4.5
Will Ospreay beat Shingo Takagi to win the Best of the Super Juniors tournament. - 5.75
Matthew Gomez
Omega Okada 4 is way better. Specially if you follow the other matches.
Camden Hughes
That's the look of a man who's almost heartbroken he's completed almost every goal in his life.
Andrew Anderson
If every match is 4 star minimum nowadays, that means that no match is truly great as being great means regressing to the norm now.
Nigger what. Omega strenght is storytelling. He has a decade old story with Ibushi and 4 matches with Okada that evolved.
Blake Cox
To Meltzer, he feels that wrestling as a whole has been elevated to beyond what used to be the normal.
To be fair, that's true.
Andrew Hernandez
I'm not them but I got burnt out on those two working 60 minutes
Jason Long
Used to 15 minute matches?
Adrian Edwards
saying that they actually sucked just means you have a shit opinion and no one should read your posts
Liam Johnson
no they went to them wrestling each other far too much in a short span
Asher Gutierrez
That's only half true.
Logan Russell
Cope harder, ECDub-Drone
Evan Young
>Jon Moxley pinned Juice Robinson to win the U.S. title. - 4.5 How can any of you take this clown seriously is beyond me
Jackson Parker
Definitely not something you can binge. I was bored between classes at Uni one day and tried watching their series. Jesus fucking Christ it’s a grind... I love them to death and I unironically think Omega/Okada II is the best match I’ve ever seen but I would never try and watch them again without taking a long break in between
Dominic Thomas
>9. Johnny Gargano vs Adam Cole, NXT Takeover: New York - 5 1/2 stars >15. Johnny Gargano vs Adam Cole, NXT: Takeover 25 - 5 1/4 stars
Shibata vs Okada not being on this list should be considered a crime.
Xavier Bailey
>Bryan v Seth v Omega >2008 RoH >easily 5* Too bad Dave never saw it, and never will
Landon Cox
Bullshit that was better than Dream/Breeze or Io/Baszler
Colton Evans
>watching Trump's friend's wrestling program
Ryan Young
You're missing at least two matches Manami Toyota and Jumbo Tsuruta also had matches that were rated 5+ by Meltzer
Lucas Jackson
shout outs to that marty scrull fan with the foam finger
Christopher Ross
Someone do the math, but if everyone else in wresting is using a 5 point scale, then doesn't this mean that a Meltzer rating of 5.5 is actually equivalent to a 3.75 rating by anyone else?
Benjamin Thompson
>All of these matches are better than any Kobashi/Misawa/Kawada match ever
I don't buy it, Dave, and I watched every match on that list.
Friendly reminder the last Misawa/Kawada match, he rated 3.5
Tyler Stewart
>the sport You had me until you said that.
Luis Bell
Meltzer worked himself when he started his 6/7 starts meme in 2017 (that 6 starts in 1994 doesn't count, was an extraordinary exception).
But when he started to add 1/2 stars and 3/4 to that... What a cringe
Evan Taylor
Well if he gives a 5 stars to the best match he's seen, then sees a better match, is he meant to give that new match 5 stars too? That would mean both matches are equal when they aren't actually. And he couldn't retroactively lower every 5 star match down to 4 1/2 so he had to go higher
Ryan Mitchell
That's not what hapenned though.
Christopher Campbell
That's why he raises the star rating. From 4-5, 5-6, & eventually 6-7. Because he felt there was a match that surpassed everything before it and that the quality of wrestling now is of a standard higher than it was back then.
David Baker
But it is
Jack Miller
What's the point of a rating system that breaks itself this often?
Jaxon Bailey
>Well if he gives a 5 stars to the best match he's seen, then sees a better match, is he meant to give that new match 5 stars too?
Yes because that's how critics work. I can give more than one music album five stars but still have a favourite. Why is this so hard for some people to understand?
Cameron Diaz
damn i predicted two out of dave's 5 star ratings exactly before the matches had even taken place why is he so predictable
Meltzer is clearly starting to show the same sings of being senile as Vince McMahon does.
Jaxon Adams
Explain to me how any of those matches are better than the ones people actually watched and paid money to see.
How the fuck Omega vs Okada or a NXT match it's better than Hogan vs Rock or Villano III vs Atlantis
Justin Ward
You're legitimately fucking retarded if you think people didn't pay big money to attend or pay money to watch these matches on stream.
Kayden Sullivan
Psychology
>in b4 your answer doesn’t count even though I asked for it Rock vs Hogan, if you don’t know why this isn’t as good as Mishawaka vs Kawasaki Budokan 94 then there’s nothing anyone can say that would educate you
