So the story goes:
NJPW announces Royal Quest show at 1/4 show at the Dome.
They start their promotion, slowly but steadily pushing the show, already sold like 5000 tickets, even with the show being on 31st of August.
WWE has a dude in ticketmaster office seeing in March that NJPW sold only 2000 tickets.
They think
>we will dunk on them and book NXT UK TakeOver on the same day, huahuahua
They book Cardiff. Because Wales you know, they need to have shows in all parts of UK, cause NXT UK not NXT England.
But... there is handegg game on the same day in Cardiff. So hotel prices are through the roof.
And... NJPW had another ticket sales office through another site. Where they sold more than 2500 tickets already when WWE booked the Cardiff show.
So...
NXT UK is running the town with somewhat big sporting event, hotels will be full and 5000 travelling fans are already going to London to see NJPW stars (and they already announced big names, not NXT UK nobodies)

It's a world cup warm-up. Rugby is MASSIVELY FUCKING HUGE in Wales, and being that it's a warm-up, the tickets are a lot cheaper so fans are pouring in to see it.

All the home nations are to an extent.

Not really, the whole rugby situation just revolves drinking and hating England. Everybody hates England. England are WWE. Wales, Ireland and Scotland are AEW, NJPW and ROH.

Rev Pro are partners with New Japan and their talent are always coming to the UK, they're big fans of the Japanese wrestlers

NJPW is very, very popular in the U.K. NJPW probably has the best roster of U.K talents of any major promotion since the big 3 are there (Marty Scurll, Will Ospreay, Zack Sabre Jr.) and the Japanese dudes routinely make appearances for Revolution Pro. I firmly believe that NJPW is a bigger deal in AUS/U.K than in the States now.

I don't get it though. Even if NJPW wasn't a factor, wouldn't the rugby game on the same day be a huge red flag? Or do they think NXT UK would just outdraw rugby?

IIRC they did a UK show last year that clashed with England's first game of the World Cup.

They're either THAT arrogant to think they'd out-draw these things, or just woefully ignorant of anything outside the WWE bubble that isn't being used to promote themselves or referenced to in order to seem hip and cool.

I actually expect to see a bit of the guys who do a lot of RevPro (Ishii, Suzuki, ZSJ, Ospreay, etc) on AEW TV.
The promotional dividends would actually be pretty substantial.

Even worse when NXT UK is basically just a worse version of Progress, so every single wrestling fan here has probably seen everyone on the show live at some point, likely multiple times, but a lot of people wont have seen Okada or Naito before

Also there is difference. When you go to WWE tapings, you are going in to watch live TV show.
When you go to NJPW show, you go see live wrestling show.
I know people on here will tell you that it is the angles and videos that are the draw. But if you are there live and have paid a lot of money for it, wouldn't you rather see awesome wrestling? Especially if there are no real superstars like Rock or Austin?
