If you want AEW to succeed, the absolute LAST thing they need is a relationship with New Japan.
Foreigners don't draw money. They don't draw a casual audience. In fact, they actively turn them away. They already fucked up enough with the joshi, which still got a lukewarm reaction from the biggest smarks in the wrestling community. Do you honestly think Mr. and Mrs. America in Bumfuck, Arkansas are going to tune in and buy tickets for that?
It doesn't matter if Okada is the "best wrestler in the world," which itself is a laughable statement. Good matches don't sell tickets. They never have, and they never will. Filling your roster with tiny foreigners that can't cut promos or work an American style will tank this fucking ship without WWE having to lift a finger.
He's right if you want to draw casual television viewers. Anyone who disagrees is delusional. NJPW relationship caters once again to the fanbase AEW already have. heard Dave Meltzer saying it needed to happen..... Meltzer is a fanboy. AEW once they start running a few shows a week will fail unless they go after the MASSES.
Jaxon Rivera
This is objectively false.
Jordan Jackson
Prove it
Matthew Jones
WCW cruiser weights drew interest though you simp. Joshi style is new and unfamiliar to the western audience but those girls put on a great show (with an admittedly botched finish) and are a great novelty to open shows or pique interest. It’s not like Yuka is going to be doing promo feuds with Brandi or anything retard
Aiden Lewis
>uses the Joshi as an example >the most over match of the night Are your parents actually blood relatives or are you only pretending to be an inbred fuckin retard?
Jace Butler
So basically you're saying that Americans are morons and don't actually care about good wrestling when they watch wrestling. I won't disagree with you.
Hunter Davis
cringe
Blake James
This guy is really stuck in 99. Casuals if anything get impressed these days by flips and other shit done in the ring because they don't follow storylines. Wrestling is no longer mainstream, the point of AEW is grabbing wrestling fans who are tired of the same old shit(WWE). Jesus Russo is a fucking idiot sometimes. >Do you honestly think Mr. and Mrs. America in Bumfuck, Arkansas are going to tune in and buy tickets for that? Of course I don't, because the only time those people cared about buying tickets was during the attitude era.
Jack Hill
You have conflated New Japan and foreigners. And Joshi with New Japan.
These things are all separate.
AEW has chosen poorly with their booking of women wrestlers. The only woman on Double or Nothing who should have been there was Allie, and she wasn't even in a match.
If AEW wants Joshi they need to go with Hiroyo Matsumoto or Maho Kurone. These are women who will work a style that will appeal to American audiences. They also need to focus on Joshi who have some curves that will be attractive to westerners.
Aja Kong, legend she may be, had no place on that card. Nyla Rose is an awkward Joke. Awesome Kong, legend she may also be, simply does not draw as a babyface and if they go that with her it will be a mistake.
AEW needs women like Heidi Katrina and Santana Garrett if they want their women's division to not be considered a joke.
Michael Murphy
A woman's division is automatically a joke.
Isaiah Davis
A "relationship" with NJPW can mean literally any 1 of 1 trillion things. This comment says more about what he thinks about AEW than anything else.
John Wood
Nope. There were still families and not too many smark infested crowds in mid to late 2000s. Just because your sawdust bump gets couple hundred thousand likes on twitter doesnt mean casuals want to see that as the main attraction. Its totally asinine. Same principles will always draw: story & character. It will never change. But wrestling has been stuck catering to hardcores for years now. There is millions of dollars to be made in the mass audience market but instead everyone is going for the same slice of the pie.
Logan Hughes
Foreigners don't draw people? Ever heard of a guy called Andre the Giant? Iron Sheik? Pedro Morales? All the Canadian wrestlers?
Good matches don't sell tickets? Wrestlemania X-Seven is considered one of the most succesful Mania's of all time and it a 4,5 star Main Event. Wrestle Kingdom 13 drew 38,162 attendees.
And I could go on for hours. Why does this failure of a man still attract fans?
Luis Russell
If you think wwe is catering to smarks then there's nothing I can do for you. It's as false as two plus two being five. Casuals left because the boom of attitude era ended and WWE stopped caring about making stars. Story, character and wrestling skill are all important. No matter what Kevin Nash may have told you in your dreams, the best wrestlers of all time were great in telling a story, in the ring, and in having great promos. WWE offers none of these right now.
Joshua Miller
What da fuck? Wrestlemania X7 had nothing to do with star ratings. It had to do with two of the biggest characters in wrestlings peak facing off.
Carson Cook
Russo doesn't know wrestling, unironically.
Justin Brooks
Yes he does. Used to watch WWWF since 70s. Not a fan of what it has become in past 15'ish years.
Brody Nelson
Agreed, foreign shit does not draw in the USA. Especially Japanshit. Only weebs like that shit.
Ryder Adams
Correct, but they were still great wrestlers.
Ryder Morgan
Yeah but the tickets are sold before the bell rings.
Chase Cooper
>he wants AEW shows to open with a 20 minute Brandi promo Yikes
Grayson Wright
>New Japan sells out msg >Doesn't draw a casual audience
Isaiah Gonzalez
>They already fucked up enough with the joshi, which still got a lukewarm reaction from the biggest smarks in the wrestling community.
Are you serious? They turned the crowd from not giving a fuck about them at the beginning of the match to being 100% invested and making a fuck load of noise for them by the end.
Landon Wilson
You think that is 1999?
American patriot Johnson vs evil communist Ivanof times ended decades ago.
Now, in the global world, Mr. Johnson can watch a Japanese on TV without thinking that he is Jackie Chan.
Andrew Moore
>Casuals if anything get impressed these days by flips and other shit done in the ring because they don't follow storylines. if that was true WWE filling their rosters with indie shitters who only know how to do flippy shit wouldn't have led to ratings being in the fucking toilet.
Bentley Young
The masses and the casual viewer are not worth catering to. The crux of what will support them is dedicated wrestling fans.
Levi Roberts
The only flippy guy theres on RAM is Ricochet, I doubt he's the reason ratings are on free fall because he's barely relevant
David Baker
Westerners don't like curves, they like fridges. All the big AE women were rectangles
Brandon Flores
they fill their rosters with guys who can do flippyshit and then don't let them do flippyshit. also they book them like geeks, don't let them have any personality, and don't tell any good stories. and are inconsistent as fuck and don't know what the word 'momentum' means.
Adrian Miller
>They already fucked up enough with the joshi, which still got a lukewarm reaction from the biggest smarks in the wrestling community imagine believing this, the biggest smark in the whole industry is called Dave Meltzer and he will most likely give it 4 and a half stars.
Faggot
Andrew Young
New Japan drew the fucking MSG simp. At least 1/4 of that was also drawn because they wanted to see Mayu in a big stage.
Of course, you are inbred so you probably think Bully Ray and Marty Scurll were the draws
Zachary Mitchell
>the best wrestlers of all time were great in telling a story, in the ring, and in having great promos By the way, interesting that the user you were talking to was not able to answer your argument, because he knows you are right. >WWE offers none of these right now. They don't. What they offer is threading water. Nobody really changing (altho I have to say, they are trying some character progression right now, but I have been burned too many times by them just ditching it, that I choose not believe them), nobody is moving along logical storyline path and the more important people on the show are people who make no sense within WWE story and should be in different place in it.
Luke Sanchez
>New Japan drew the fucking MSG simp
Now do it week after week
Nathan Butler
He's bought out......... bitch
Zachary Williams
Quick question. Is there currently a wrestling promotion that can sell more than 12500 tickets to MSG each week? So we establish if your goal is possible to do.
Landon Scott
ha, I got nice trips Anyway, I asked my question, because you have moved those goalpost nicely. You think you are smart, don't you.
Jaxson Sanders
On WM Weekend. And it was announced back when Kenny with signed with New Japan and The Bucks and Cody with ROH. The show was sold on The ELITE and New Japan with everyone already there for WM Weekend.
Daniel Martinez
That was then, this is now. Boomers like fridge women with bolt-ons. AEW is not a boomer company.
Robert Wright
Moves are not going to fucking draw big money. Never ever. Thats not what wrestling was built on. Smarks were crapping on RAW having too little wrestling in the attitude era. They never change.
Aiden Howard
explain NJPW or literally any wrestling that isn't WWE the correct answer is you need both elements of course - anyone who says differently is an idiot
Camden Jenkins
I dont think he meant that they had to do a show at msg every week im pretty sure he just meant that they had to sell that many tickets to every show they do. Obviously that wont happen because they dont attract casuals unless they do LA, Chicago, NYC or other major cities. You do know that the same people who were at DON were also at Wrestlemania, Money in the bank, and royal rumble. They have alot of the same fans flying out to see these shows, instead of 90% of the people being from the local area the event is in.
Noah Murphy
Its all the hardcores who are watching them. Internet is so widely available, its not hard to have few hundred thousand hardcore fans. No casual fan who does not hang in the IWC cares or knows about NJPW.
Zachary Green
hardcore wrestling fans are the only wrestling fans who exist today we'll see if AEW can bring back any casuals, because WWE sure as fuck aren't going to do it.
Levi Lopez
Most wrestling shows open with a 20 minute promo by somebody for some fat ass reason.
Owen Edwards
>explain NJPW The best and most remembered feuds in Japanese wrestling are all based around very simple puroresu that doesn't involve must flipping and flopping. Just dramatic choppa choppa and head drops.
Blake Sanders
Yeah although there are some elements that feel bit too indyish in AEW but hopefully people will check it out on TNT and they can keep them interested
Lincoln Sanchez
people wanna fuck cute jap girls keep seething
Connor Adams
Its funny because AEW has 0 heavyweights and New Japan's guys are much bigger on average. They literally have a height requirement for their dojo.
Jaxson Gonzalez
what elements did you think were bad or too indy? they had some production problems, the camerawork in particular missed a lot of spots. commentary was better than i thought it would be. Excalibur was great and JR was good after a slow start that made me nervous. i heard some other people say bad things about the 3rd guy but i didn't notice him one way or another, didn't strike me as being bad. they definitely had some indy/BTE segments early on and i think they were testing the waters to see how that would go over if they got rid of the youtube series and did that stuff without changing much on their weekly tv show. stage setup looked good and professional, i don't need more than that. WWE's doesn't look better. just curious what your thoughts were, what you thought was bad.
Carson Gutierrez
Its an interesting dilemma.
Go after a wider audience (which might not be there desu) or stick to pleasing hardcore fans?
For now you'd think they have to stick to pleasing fans to differentiate themselves from wwe
Elijah Hernandez
>Andre the Giant Absolute freak of nature whom people wanted to see, became an icon. >Iron Sheik People turned out to see him as a massive foreign heel. Can't do that now. >Pedro Morales Appealed to the Puerto Rican community in NYC >Canadian wrestlers And? They're viewed as a brother country to the U.S.
Grayson Baker
While you make a good point, I think that storytelling across the business is being neglected. Wrestling needs grand story lines like Austin vs McMahon as much as 5 star matches like Austin vs Bret.
Cameron Young
...
Jonathan Baker
>Filling your roster with guys that can't cut promos will tank this fucking ship >Gave Kidman, Mike Awesome, Chuck Palumbo, Meat, Vampiro, Candido, KroniK, and The Cat mic time
Ryan Kelly
non-american anything is generally poison to american audiences. i have no idea how you can live here and not find that self-evident. always gonna be exceptions and one off events, there's 325 million people here with 365 days/year to do shit. thats more than enough people to put 40k asses in seats for a lot of goofy shit every once in awhile that 99.9% of the rest of the population doesn't give a shit about
Adam Perez
Bruh screeching nip girls is not fun to watch or attractive. You are part of a microscopic fringe group
