I think you mean he wasn't the play by play commentator.
He was on commentary for AXSTV's presentation of NJPW for a couple of years or something and they still brought him out last year for WM and a few other events, its not like he has been doing nothing this whole time and that doesn't make up for the fact that he simply doesn't know the names of most of the moves, many from fairly fresh wrestlers with new names.
By the end of the show he was botching the website address.
