>trick tip: stretch and warm up witg the basics before going buck
This saved my old body so many times, take your time to warm up, even stretch if needed. So many tricks will go much easier with warm and supple muscles.
Skated for the 6th times now after a 10 year break long boarding. Love rippin in smaller halfpipes, the small ones are so much fun with different stalls, grinds and plants.
it's just a way he figured it works for him, try it, although he mainly skates vert.
Nolan Lee
badass as
Logan Foster
Hey so I’m trash at skateboarding (can barely land Ollie’s) but I’ve been trying that exhale technique as of late and I feel I’ve been landing my Ollie’s more consistently. Could be I’ve been skating more and just gotten better that way, but couldn’t hurt to try the breathing technique. Feels like I bail out less compared to before.
I've been doing kickflips recently and I've had trouble with the direction of the flick.
I’ve always heard to keep your shoulders square but what about hips? I’m having a really hard time doing the flick to the 10:30 direction (assuming the nose points to 12) and I think it might be because I keep my hips parallel to the board. Is this not necessary?
um i guess ill be "that guy" and say that this is sort of bad advice because this kind of shit is exactly what you dont want to be doing, which is, overthinking things. like if youre worrying about how youre fucking breathing when trying stuff youre just cluttering your mind up more. but hey whatever works for you.
also wouldnt trying stuff with your lungs empty be a perfect recipe for slamming and getting your 'wind knocked out'? that fucking sucks thats definitely a situation i want to avoid but thats just me
Sebastian Stewart
Here, this is much more due to people being more focused on style.
Try kicking it slightly downwards, and you'll probably land it.
Austin Fisher
ETA
So yeah, its not necessary, its for the extra steeze
>been taking my sweet ass time learning ollies >hops consistent >pops getting there >for the first time ever, actually leveled out the board with my front foot >twice in a row >lose them immediately afterward hey, progress is progress
Jack Evans
Keep those two makes in the back of your head. Knowing how a trick is supposed to feel is half the battle and now you know.
Speaking of ollies. Does anyone else enjoy watching a fluid skater pop a rocket ollie while hauling ass? High popping rockets look bad, I mean those low, nonchalant little pops.
>noise rises on the pop >click-clack landing >nose slams down like a clamshell snapping shut
I like em. They feel riskier than a full Ollie when your going fast. At least at first. Then you get good at them and you can use them to your advantage to clear patches of crust.
Any decent canvas shoes? I need something to cruise to work in on the upcoming hot days.
Justin Collins
Converse with shoe goo Ollie pads have never done me wrong especially for just cruising. Wouldn't be jumping stairs in them though
Jonathan Clark
Denver the Last Dinosaur had better skateboard animation
Lincoln Cooper
holy fuck, I want his style
Jacob Myers
seriously, I'm the same guy who just replied, this guy isn't shutting spots, he's shutting homes.
Dream situation: Welcome never broke up and they signed him.
Wet dream situation: Frog signs him, they break off from ekin and skateboarding continues.
Nathaniel Martinez
trick at 3:08 was filmed so sketchy, nobody can grasp its awesomness.
Also, the fucking homie always blocks the point of view when he's ollying through the corner pocket in the skatepark at the beginning of the part.
Jeremiah Torres
been a while /esg/
about a month ago I found out that I’m pretty good at nollie back bigspins, been doing them for years but rarely do them since they hurt my ankles on flat >did one down a long 3 block >did one over two and a half decks >did one on a super awkward bump to bump in the park >literally as versitile as my kickflips which I’ve been working on for years, maybe more even >landed all that in a day after randomly trying that trick on stuff
>tfw promised myself last year to quit skating the week after to focus on my final year at uni >havent skated in a month and all I think about are all the spots I could’ve gotten this trick on feels badman
Bretty good. Learned sweepers for the fuck of it because little park sharks do it all the time. Also learned Ollie Nose Bonk Fakie after seeing some Penny footy get reposted on insta. Skated switch at the end of the sesh for practice, and holy shit, I fucking suck ass at switch. Even pushing switch going fast is kinda jenky sometimes and I have to treat it like it's fakie to even make it feep stable. I guess it really comes down with muscle memory but it was kinda eye opening. It truly is like learning how to skate all over again, to a degree.

Yea Forums here. Is mid90s accurate? I was born in 97 and don't skate so I have no way of knowing
Christian Ross
aesthetically? yes.
but a little too much of an idealized jonah hill self-insert if you ask me. that scene where the kid is getting a complete built at the shop that was shot like it was jesus christ himself descending on us was cringey as fuck.
I'm just bitter because I used to like jonah hill but now it just seems like he drank the hollywood kool-aid and sees himself as an auteur of some kind.
Eli Hall
How hard actually are hardflips? Anyone who can share? How long did they take you?
not that much if you have a good kickflip, I recommend kickflipping over a pyramid hip to get that feel of your front foot flipping frontside if you want the not-too-vertical kind of hardflips
Easton Bennett
Are good front shuvs important? I suck at them bad
Blake Barnes

i think its more about having quick flick, i can fs shuv really good and cant hardflip due to bad flick
Brayden Rodriguez
user you replied to here, they help but also thisbut you probs should learn stuff your body is naturally better at, pay attention to which direction your shoulders spin easier and where you scoop easier and build your bag of tricks on that. easier to learn a lot that way IMO
Aaron Hall
>tfw nice out but with regular showers Got a raging skate boner but the last time I was impatient I ruined my bearings. Hold me bros.
Aiden Reyes
So I just came to the realization that by bending my knees before the pop and on the landing, an ollie becomes a thousand times more manageable and it feels like I've unlocked a new ability in a video game.
Nicholas Kelly
to me, it was realising I must not get afraid to pop and use my goddamned front foot
Blake Foster
I see. Interesting. What year were you born/how old were you in the actual mid 90s?
Lucas Lee
Jeremy Thackeray doing all sorts of fuckery
Oliver Brown
I only overcame that recently and I still don't have it consistent but the knees thing definitely helped with this as well, just by the virtue of making me feel safer thanks to added stability and control. The feeling of tail bolts hitting the back foot in the air as the board levels out is pure sex.
Jordan Sanders
I haven't really felt that, maybe my ollies are still erratic, but I am able to clear two decks
Oliver Jackson
small kid. most of my memories of that era come from old videos I watched between roughly 97-02. honestly, if you check out some parts from the 90's, you'll find that the movie got the look and feel right.
Anthony Sullivan
Maybe I'm the one doing it weird. I never ollied over an obstacle so I definitely won't lecture you.
Isaac Young

I loved the OJ wheels so much i'm going to try their "Elite" series. Got some Raybourn 54mm 101a's. I'm assuming they'll be the exact same as Insane-a-Thanes. Since I know F4's are godlike I really wanna try Bones STF's next to REALLY narrow down a wheel I like. So far Spitfire is undefeated, but god damn, OJ is giving it a run for it's money. One thing I noticed about OJ's is when you smack your wheels on the ground (like when giving a skatebro props) it's more like a brittle smack than a thud, this may indicate slightly harder urethane in OJ's. I'll stick with F4's for indoor, 99a's have the perfect grip for wood.
Well... I've always been good at doing things backside. But I suck at BS 180s. I can BS Flip but I will land like two out of ten 180s. I don't know what I'm doing wrong
Haven't been on a pair of spitfires in years. Current and last set have been bones. Just switched from their park formula to street. A little softer. Feels less icy when I need to powerslide at higher speeds. Haven't tried any OJ's yet.
I always slapped my nose or tail not the wheels.
Jonathan Roberts
Remember to rotate your wheels as soon as you notice that one rear wheel starting to get smaller.
Yeah I already commited to Bones STF's as my next set of wheels. There was a 9 year old set of Pig wheels collecting dust at the local skateshop. It made me laugh, does Pig even still make wheels? I remember them being okay but their durometer measuring was out of whack. This is actually good advice and also an easy way of getting rid of flatspots.
Jackson Powell
Meant to quote you, my bad.

Where should I shop for skate clothes? I've been going to the thrift store because they usually have good quality stuff for cheap, and because I like the designs better. For example, I copped some 90s looking denim jeans in new condition for $2, meanwhile if I wanted to buy something like them from a skate store they'd cost $70. I'm sick of the thrift store because I want new clothes, but I don't know any good stores, online or real life. Everything I've been looking at is basic shit with brand logos plastered all over the clothing. When I ride, I don't want to be a rolling advertisement.
literally just wear what you feal confident in, what ever that may be. for me its some big ass jeans or cargos. my own style makes me vomit desu but im happy

alright story time >get off work from 10hr shift >skate across street to local park(not skate park) >nice slick concrete flat ground that's like a stage >spend 5 min warming up >english bitch all of a sudden screaming to get out and that she called the cops >scream back some bs about being a tax payer, do a couple tre bombs and leave > as i'm leaving, jock dad and son walk past me up to the stage >notheydont.jpg >lady sees them does nothing >i loose it and start yelling for her to do her job, she previously had said she would kick anyone off not just skaters >her boss comes out >dosentgiveafuck.png >"look man she just has to paint the walls" >he leaves, lady sneaks back inside >no one in sight now, jock family has left >i skate for 50 min straight landing tre flips, pressure flips, rick flips and the best bs flip i have ever done >iwin.gif

What's even better is landing tricks in front of security, who are bewildered and don't know what the fuck to do. Getting that shit on film is a thing to be desired. I recently had an incident of skating a park before it was done being built, despite "no trespassing" signs, the cops just drive on by, not giving a shit despite lame pedestrians calling the cops on me.
Logan Hughes

well Yea Forums was started to counterattack the type of forum that slap is so maybe thats why it seems better by conparision. when they started Yea Forums in 2003 it was because on SA it showed your reg date above every post. so people would auto ignore anyone with a new regdate and it became just a small handful of people interacting with eachother. on slap they dont show your regdate but they show your rep count so the same problem ends up occuring, and thats why Yea Forums can seem better by comparision (not saying it is or isnt)
Aiden Martin
The fuck are two on about? Every fall/winter the snowbros have their little discussions here on /esg/ and no one has had a problem with it.
It's a good point. A few anons have brought it up before. Might be worth a try after the Olympics.

What deck size do you guys ride? I see a lot of mentions of 8.5s so I got quite intrugued.
So how do I actually get into skating without feeling like a moron? I can hardly stand on the board while it's moving, and i realize the best bet is to just practice, but doing it alone i feel like a goober. Should I see if I can find other people in my town that skate? Would people think I'm dumb for trying to hang out with people when I can't even skate yet?
Jeremiah Thompson
if you really cared you wouldn't be asking those questions
Ryder Campbell
Look man, why do I have to start as a ride or die, can't live without it, punk. I got some interest in it, can I just get some advice kicked my way without the holier than though attitude?
Chase Peterson
it's not hollier than thou, if you really want to skate you'll be out skating, not giving a fuck what other skaters, magazines or media tell you. And you'll figure things out for yourself. Responding seriously to your question would actually be "hollier-than-thou" attitude; why should my method be better than yours? And who am I to deprive you of the pleasure of learning?
Adam Turner
Dude just skate
Matthew Nguyen
Look man, it's something I'm trying to develop an interest in. Clearly the things I've mentioned are a roadblock for me, or I wouldn't be asking for advice on it, and responding with "if you really wanted to skate you'd just be doing it" isn't helping me just do it.
You don't have to help me, but we are in a general thread, so I'm asking a general question. If someone else wants to help out that'd be much appreciated.
Christopher Hernandez
Do you have a skatepark where you live? That'll be your best bet to find like-minded people who also skate. Just start up conversation by asking how their day is going, be friendly, and go from there. I got into a skate crew by bringing a barbeque and burgers to the park and said "hey gonna cook some bergs, anyone hungry?" I made instant lifelong friends from doing that.
Benjamin Murphy
I can do this but the board rotates between my legs

Just go to a park and practice. As long as you have basic park etiquette (don't block traffic or features, don't stay in the bowl for extended periods of time, generally don't be a dick) and you're actually trying then no one is judging you. It doesn't matter if you can barely stand on it just as long as you're not taking up space for no reason. Everyone likes a respectful beginner who's improving more than they like than they like an expert who snakes everyone. Slight judgement if you push mongo maybe, but that's the only thing I can think of. If anyone thinks you're uncool for your skill level they're in middle school.
Isaiah Jackson

I'm working on BS 180s and slowly improving. For me, what finally gets the land is making sure my shoulders are just past parallel when I land, weight centered, spot the landing, and pop/hang it juuuust a little more than I'm comfortable with. Also keeping my weigh more toward the direction of travel is an issue since I'm more used to BS slides.

I appreciate this man. When you say don't block traffic or features, that's basically like, stay away from areas people seem to go through a lot and stay out of the way of the rails and stairs and junk, yeah?

I decided to completely upgrade my setup. How’s this look? I’m open to suggestions if anyone has any. Wasn’t sure if it would be worth it to splurge for lighter indys or better bearings.

Anyone wear a helmet/safety gear?
>30 years old >skated a bit when younger, could barely Ollie >started skating again about two weeks ago >decided to wear a helmet past two sessions >fucked up practicing shuv its (lol), landed bad, kicked out the board and basically whip lashed the back of my skull onto the pavement
Damn bros, if it wasn’t for that helmet I’d possibly be posting from hospital, lol. I admit I feel a little goofy wearing one, but I think I’ll rock one from now on out after my last session.
Andrew Ward
I feel like a dunce wearing one, but it keeps me from cracking my skull open. My only issue is I don’t think they’re comfortable.
Jack Davis
The fact that Heath is towing him at the spot he FS flipped makes it so much better
Jeremiah Jones
I don't wear helmets since they fuck with my balance but I'll wear pads sometimes if I'm doing stuff in the pool

>would be worth it to splurge for lighter indys
Nah bro. Im not about paying more to stand on a hollow kingpin. Standard Indy's have grade 8 kingpins and 4140 steel axles. Cant find any info on hollow kingpin grades or the steel used in hollow axles. My guess is they aren't using grade 8 and 4140 for hollows.
Anyone have a pair of hollows they want to dismount and post a picture of the markings on the kingpin head?
Jack Ramirez
No, but I really should be when I skate tranny taller than 9ft. I've lost all ability what people think of my skating. Can any skatebros do a solid and recommend me a helmet/pads? All I have is a snowboard helmet which fit the head of a 16 year old me, but now makes me look handicapped in my adulthood.

heavy trucks + light deck is godly
Justin Sanders
Great taste. Habitat decks are really sturdy from what I remember, but then again I wasn't as hefty as I am now. Trucks are what I skate, but I skate 149mm. Wheels are ace, bearings are good to good. One thing though is because you have 55mm wheels, 144mm trucks and 8.25 deck, you may get a bit of wheel bite. I wouldn't bother for now, but if you get bites on your deck I would get. 1/4 or a 1/2in riser and get longer hardware. Otherwise, I would gladly skate your setup, good stuff.
Austin Rogers
How do I stop my back foot from leaving my board when I'm doing an ollie? Is it all just a matter of timing?
when will esg get a discord server and leave this godforsaken hellhole
Ryan Barnes
OK, this is epic
Juan Morris
not that guy but I skate 55 on indys (even 56mm cruisers) and I never got wheelbite. he'll be fine.
Colton Lee
I'm not sure if I fully understand your question, but your back foot is totally supposed to leave the board. It shouldn't even be touching the board during the pop (i.e. the moment the tail hits the ground). Your back foot is just supposed to send the tail but then you lift it up immediately to create room for leveling the tail.
Honestly, the back foot motion was the biggest hurdle for me. Most drills tell you to lift the nose and drag your front foot. What they don't tell you is that what you do with the back foot is not a stomp, but a quick hop. In reality, ground-tail-foot are never all touching at the same time. It's foot-tail, then tail-ground, then tail-foot again in the air.
Zachary Rivera

>wanna try etnies maranas >expensive as fuck have these shoes EVER been on sale?
I think my ollies were looking too much like ollie souths so that's what I wanted to fix. I'm over boning the ollie so I end up landing in a nose manual position. From what I can tell, I just need to stop pushing my front foot so far down so I'm leveled.
Jack Hill
So what's the reasoning behind what kind of shoes you want to wear when skateboarding? I got a pair of converse I wear everywhere, is that fine?

New posters on /esg/ better read this and fucking LEARN IT.
I manage to find alot of "skate pants" at places like Ross (see also Marshalls, TJ Maxx) Unlimited stretchy Levis, other stuff from volcom, rvca, matix regularly. Always $10-$20. Some flannels there too. Dickies are great and cheap. I like the 873 better because it has a lower more relaxed waist and is a little slimmer, but hardly a really "slim" fit, the flex fit variety is also more breathable, and less stiff. I mostly get dickies or carhartt pocket tees at local hardware store. Uniqlo U tee for a totally blank tee with carhartt fit and feel. I'm picky about tees and hate the thin material, undershirt like fit that's so predominant on most blanks. I scan tactics, ccs, skatewarehouse etc. for whatever shoes are 50% or more off. They usually have clothes discounted that much too.
