Around 1 million people in the west watch wrestling for the wrestling matches. This has been a consistent mass of people that make up the viewership of ROH, Impact, and NJPW. This number is not going to go up, and it is not going to sustain a WWE competitor on a major network. When TNA was drawing its highest numbers it was a show about characters and stories first, wrestling second. When it was highest regarded by the fans it had great wrestling AND great stories, and it had proper writers and bookers planning everything ahead.
Everyone else watches wrestling for the soap opera aspects.
Jerry Lawler never did a 450 splash Hulk Hogan never did a shooting star press Stone Cold Steve Austin's greatest popularity came at the time when his wrestling was the shittiest of his career.
Pro Wrestling is not a sport. Presenting it like a sport is dumb because there are actual sports out there to watch that have the advantage of being real.
Pro Wrestling is a form of live performance theatre. Theatre, not acrobatics. That means acting. That means characters. That means plots and stories. When you try to diminish this part of it you are taking away the core draw of it.
>When it was highest regarded by the fans it had great wrestling AND great stories, and it had proper writers and bookers planning everything ahead. When the fuck was this? The only time TNA was ever considered 'good' was a brief period between 2005 and 2007, but then it went to shit super quick when Dixie became more proactively involved and showing off what a huge ringrat mark she was.

>When the fuck was this? Right before Hogan and Bischoff came in, and Terry Taylor + Dutch Mantel + Al Snow were mostly running things.

The whole sport presentation thing is gonna draw a lot of pic related from normies. Wrestling never gets mocked more in the west than when it's treated like actual competition. A bunch of guys who wrestled in japan are involved so perhaps they don't know any better. They'll learn quickly or die.
That was literally some of the worst of TNA, because Russo was secretly booking shit and we all wondered what the fuck happened to Dutch Mantel create such garbage.
1 million is sustainable tho. Wrestling will never be as big as it was before because there is too much competition. As long as they keep budgets in order theyre golden.

>Wrestling will never be as big as it was before because there is too much competition.
>AEW will die for booking a show that caters to the entire fanbase who stopped watching over the past few years, the audience who stopped watching 20 years ago and a new audience they have been building themselves Well, maybe but it's better than dying because you book a show for one senile old man that's only watched by autistic boomers and tarps

Incorrect. WCW presented itself as a sport before and after nWo and it was a huge draw for awhile. In fact once they got incredibly retarded and tried to cartoonify the show is when they went into serious decline. That cartoon/Springer shit isn't going to cut it for wrestling in the current year. Presenting it as a sport is actually the best way to get casuals to take it more seriously and not laugh at it for its ridiculous cartoony presentation. Also during Hogan's first run while WWF did have a cartoonish presentation it didn't have it through his whole run. If you ever go back to watch some of his biggest rivalries and the shows as a whole they actually felt way cooler and more realistic than what we have today with the insanely cringe scripted garbage promos and over exposure of woman's wrestling. Case in point Macho Man's epic promo.
If AEW can balance the mandrama aspects while presenting the show as super serious sportslike than they can possibly become huge. If this happens WWE's hand will be forced and they will need to do a massive change.

we both know that's not gonna happen. they should just stick to what they know.
Yeah this is probably what will actually happen. They need to be hiring 6ft+ guys and allow them to roid up. These vanilla midgets will bury the company before it gains any momentum.
