I want to get new wheels for transportation/cruising. Whats the biggest size I should look for on a normal 8" setup? I imagine wheel bite be a problem if they're too big
Elijah Rivera
everybody try your hardest next skate session and make sure you practice properly! land it two more times if you land it to lock it down
Aaron Young
you can get risers if wheelbite becomes an issue
Tyler James
ricta clouds or bones atf are super soft and come in smaller sizes
i have ricta clouds 53mm on my cruiser
Wyatt Perry
>land it two more times if you land it to lock it down hell no
I am a staunch opposer to that philosophy.
If I landed it so well, if the moment felt so good, why force it? I can keep this moment to myself and let it enrich my perception.

spitfire soft ds are another option. wax under your wheel wells if you're worried about biting or install risers
Jordan Collins
Guys, I created this. Does this have a name? I can take it as high as I can jump
56mm is totally fine with standard indy trucks. I use 56mm spitfire 80HD to cruise to work and they're awesome. Above that you'd probably need a riser.
Kevin Scott

Just bought the 80HD's 56mm, cant wait to test them out tomorrow. Thanks anons

Thank you

I cant seem to get enough air when I jump to complete an ollie. I feel like I come down too fast and that the board slips out from my feet, or I barely have my feet leave the board. It's very discouraging but I yearn to do my first ollie. I've watched videos, i've read tutorials, I can't seem to grasp it though.
the emerica leo romero pro models.. if they still make those.. didnt they call them the laced or something? they come with a few eyelets and laces but even in the ads they told you to run them without laces, like that was the gimmick
have you tried doing it over something? even just a pencil?

Eli Baker
is this a real condition? are you sure you weren't just under stress? And no, what even is banned?
Cooper Martin
I have IBS. otherwise known as Irritable bowel syndrome. Everytime I tried a flip trick I would let rip a nasty fart. I was wondering if u guys think anyone else noticed that I suffer from this.
Joshua Sullivan
I know what it is, I understood what you said the first time, I am wondering if it's a real thing and you just weren't under stress.
Jacob Rogers
I've been diagnosed with it since I was 15
David Murphy
were you farting while getting diagnosed?
Ian Gonzalez
Ive been suffering from stomach issues since I hit puberty. Its gotten a lot better with diet and meds. But i still have very bad gas. I work from home and the only place I really go out to is the skate park. I'm wondering if my gas makes me unwelcome there if there are other people there.

As you can see from my near pristine setup I'm a beginner, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. They are very comfortable to cruise on and keep the speed up for a very long time. I use reds bearings btw. Cracks are no problem, and they somehow felt more stable, I guess due to a bigger contact surface.
That being said, riding them is faster than my old wheels(53mm 99d). Something I experienced while going down a little hill that I've done a couple times on my old wheels, pic related. I'm not sure if this is due to the wheel size or because I didnt lose as much speed in between pushes.
Tomorrow I'm gonna try to learn how to slow down while staying on the board
like this user said sometimes getting the idea into your brain that you are sort of "picking up the board and carrying it over something" with your feet is enough.
that being said the ollie is a really tough trick to get right- im sure most of us spent upwards of 6+ months before we got decent ollies
its a wierd action that you just have to trick your body into doing.
just keep at it, and try your hardest not to get bogged down repeating what doesn't work
>adidas aren't even 3 months old >shoe laces on the right shoe have snapped in 4-5 places > finger sized holes in the left shoe from learning to ollie >rubber in front of right shoe is almost worn through from toe drag >other miscellaneous damage from regular wear >work boots stick to grip tape better than these "skate" shoes
60 fucking dollars, I should have just bought some cheap maui and sons
never again adidas
Brandon Evans
what model? ive been thinking about getting adidas since the core brands are shit now and dont want to support nike but i know nothing of their quality considering i have never owned a pair
this is why i stick with walmart dickies. not for the fashion but just because theyre basically disposable at $17 a pair. and usually its just the clasp that breaks not the pant itself
Logan Carter
I got my adididas like 4-5 years ago and the holes they have right now I think is only do to the test of time since it has holes on parts that never touch griptape. Maybe the brand is lowering their quality because mine are good for old shoes
Hunter Brown
Any wheelbite at 56mm on your indies?
Adam Nguyen
is that supposed to be bad? i have never skated a pair of shoes that lasted longer than 3 months. the laces break apart after about a month.
Jackson Collins
>rubber in front of right shoe is almost worn through from toe drag
How fucking much do you toe drag, every time you do a trick? Been skating adidas only for the past 2 years and they're by far the best/most durable shoes I've had. A pair of Vans will last me maximum 2 months, while a pair of Adi Ease's last me minimum 4 months.
I could've saved so much money if I hopped on adidas bandwagon earlier in my life.
Tyler Reed
Its because the 80HD wheels are a lot softer and won't lose as much speed on rough surface as 99A wheel would.
On the flip side, you cannot use 80HD's on wooden bowls - you can't do kick turns, because as soon as the wheel hits the surface it sticks and gaining speed on wooden surface with soft wheels is a lot of work.
Noah Martin
Depends on how loose trucks do you use.
My regular set up has 56mm Bones', and I use 1/8" riser pads with them, but I also skate loose/wobbly trucks. The wheelbiting gets more mellow/non existent once the wheel wells are formed.
Charles Young
I've developed a habit of braking through toe drag, not toe drag through tricks. i've noticed toe drag to brake isn't generally recommended but I can't figure out why. My dad told me that's how he did it so that's just what I started doing.
I'm just buttmad that I blew 60 dollars on a pair of shoes only to have holes and chewed shoe laces within the first of months. I I would have got a cheap pair had I known the kind of damage skating does to shoes.
Asher Reyes
> i've noticed toe drag to brake isn't generally recommended but I can't figure out why. >but I can't figure out why.
Its because it breaks your shoes. Learn to break with your skateboard instead, wheels can take a lot more riction than shoes can.
Luis Gutierrez
Learning to slide is on my list of shit to do. I bought some harder wheels to learn on but apparently they aren't hard enough. the ride is noticeably shittier from that of my cruiser wheels as well.
Is there a set of cruiser wheels that can slide and ride effectively over shit concrete? seems like an either or to me. shark wheels are supposed to slide but they seem like a gimmick
Nicholas Taylor
Any wheel will slide if you have the speed for it, going faster is the key to a lot in skateboarding.
I've got 78A's on my cruiser set up and they slide, but I do have to put a lot more weight into it for them to actually break out to a slide. Just start practicing regular reverts from slow speeds and then start working them up to actual powerslides, you'll get the hang of it eventually.
Jack Bennett
Not that guy but I haven't had a wheelbite even once on mine and I would describe my trucks as reasonably loose. 139 indys.
Ryder Morgan
>Any wheel will slide if you have the speed for it, going faster is the key to a lot in skateboarding. Not that user, but I'm not convinced "gotta go fast" is the best way to slow down
Yeah I guess you learned the hard way that cruisers go fast. What I do to slow down is touch the ground with my pushing foot for just a split second, kind of a small pushing motion, but ever so slightly against the direction in which I'm going. Don't wanna destroy my shoes by toe dragging. I imagine doing this would make me eat shit instantly above a certain speed, but I'd never dare to go that fast around my streets.
Brody Davis
Fair point, but it is noticeably easier to power slide going fast, than it is going slow.
Speed is a crucial part of skateboarding, though. Especially if you're skating a crusty spot and don't want to wax the living shit out of every surface you want to grind. I might be a bit biased about wax though, since I grew up around the culture that you get beaten if you wax basically anything.
Josiah Gomez
Either you destroy your shoes by dragging your feet, or you learn how to powerslide. There is really no other way if you want to go down hills.
Evan Morris
Is this a Darby Allen thread?
James Flores
I figured as much but I'm nowhere near bombing hills yet anyway.
Ayden Roberts
>78A
what is the shape of the wheel? I was under the impression that cruiser wheels were ridiculously difficult to slide with
>put more weight into it
I though you had to get less weight on the board to get it to slide. like do a little jump when your kicking the board out.
Adrian Allen
78A is the hardness of the urethane, 78A is pretty much the softest wheel on the market and they go up to around 104A, which are really hard wheels.
>I though you had to get less weight on the board to get it to slide. like do a little jump when your kicking the board out.
That's why powersildes are somewhat tricky in the beginning, you have to kind of push it in to force the wheels into a slide and once you're sliding its all about managing your balance. If you stop applying pressure and go completely weightless, you will end up slipping out of the slide and falling on your arse. Learning how to do basic reverts comfortably will get you started on how you should be applying your weight.
Hudson Hernandez
>If you stop applying pressure and go completely weightless, you will end up slipping out of the slide and falling on your arse.
To add to this, or you will have the exact opposite happen and you will fling forward - which is the worse outcome.
Its literally all about keeping your balance point checked.
>I was under the impression that cruiser wheels were ridiculously difficult to slide with
They are at first, but like I said, speed helps - I'm not pulling out fat powerslides going walking speed. I think it might even be easier for you to learn how to powerslide with hard wheels first, or you can just cruise around with the soft wheels and try to get more comfortable at going a bit faster.
Charles Long
how do I get good enough at powerslides to use it as a brake? Best I can do is a split second scrape that doesn't reduce speed at all.
Zachary Jenkins
>that being said the ollie is a really tough trick to get right- im sure most of us spent upwards of 6+ months before we got decent ollies
I'm constantly imrpoving my ollie and more than this, my confidence in my ollie.
Matthew Cox
it takes awhile. its something youre going to have to practice. in the begining try to find the absolute best, smoothest ground you can, and its going to help big time to get the hardest wheels you can for learning with. its easier backside than frontside. try to throw yourself the whole way round on a back 180, but no popping. once you can do that, do it faster. try to go 360. once you are confident you can try doing it without going 180 and just powersliding as a brake. once you learn what it takes and how to push into it properly, youll be able to rely on it as a brake on pretty much any setup. but you wont be able to do it like that right away.
these are pretty much the same as the cruisers I have.
Thanks for the info. I will get some hard wheels and start with reverts
Jason Long
It's going to be interesting in 10-20 years when there will be a massive amount of 50-60 year olds skating. I hope my body is well enough to continue skating into my 50's-60's. I wanna be the park gramps who stokes everyone up.
Cooper Butler
>Not that user, but I'm not convinced "gotta go fast" is the best way to slow down
It is for softer wheels. You need to get them spinning fast enough or else the will just grip during the slide and toss you off.
Julian Cox
their shoes are all cut pretty low pajama pants need to make a comeback just get some higher durometer wheels. unless you're skating some real crusty shit i find hard wheels work best for most things >skate late at night and early in the morning because of work >haven't had any skate homies in ten years
skateanons I bought an enjoi board off the rack from stix in downtown Monrovia as a 26 year with negligible experience.
I did have the board fly out from under my feet, not sure why, crossing a street around 3 am to go to Norm's and my left lat and shoulderblade made first contact but I'm sort of in shape and didn't hit my head or get whiplash and barely spilled my beer.
I've sort of looked like an idiot a few times no doubt but it's been fun to get groceries with it.

> its easier backside than frontside.
True, but also remember that fs reverts are easier than bs reverts, so learning actual powerslides can be tricky, but just keep at it and you'll get it sooner or later.
Landon Mitchell
If you are going fast, its a lot harder to actually drop and roll if you lose your balance and fall forward suddenly, but if you slip out backwards you can almost always just kind of catch the ground and do a bit of a baseball slide on the crete.

Bought a new deck after I broke my old pool deck. Gonna break it in tomorrow in the indoor skate park. Can't wait. I am 36 by the way and streetskated when younger, then long boarded for ages. Love to get back into street/park skating.
>in the begining try to find the absolute best, smoothest ground you can, and its going to help big time to get the hardest wheels you can for learning with.
And its reverse with soft wheels, if you really just want to go directly to learning how to powerslide with soft weels (which I do not recommend, its A LOT harder.), you should find the crustiest flat you can.
Shittier ground = less friction.
Benjamin Lee
Cant go wrong with the eagle. Good choice

Thanks man, just rode in a half pipe and I love this deck!
>bean skating since I was 9 >I'm now 29 >only last week did I find out there is a nose and tail
I figured they were the same size (maybe they were on my old boards?) but I got a board last month and the tail is definitely longer than the nose and after seeing it posted in this thread the other day it's been messing with my head game.
Nicholas Cooper
>tail is definitely longer than the nose I thought the tail was the shorter end
some people skate that way, nothing wrong with it. The intended advantage of the design though is that a steeper, longer tail gives your front foot something to catch for ollies, and more surface to flick for flip tricks.

Heelflip front nose because I canโt kickflip. Heelflip front tails are easier for me though.
Oof yeah I get in this situation if I ride my stance too frequently without doing nose stalls/nollies/switch. What usually happens is my tail gets worn down and becomes my nose. But by that point the deck has usually been snapped so meh. Personally, I counteract by treating nose and tail as the same thing. Thing is, I do grip art too, which makes the process easier.

Hunter Howard
in my experience most japanese skaters don't care for klein's work.
I get asked what skaters I like a lot and when I mention Jeremy the response is usually a (polite) negative one. My japanese isn't good so I could be hearing this wrong, but they usually say that he "copies" japanese artwork. (meaning he steals it, pretty normal in skateboard art imo) but I usually just drop it after that.

this is harder to get into than backside, but once you're in, the rest is easy provided you have enough speed. it's tricky because you have to pivot a little, which causes you to lose speed
what i try to do is complete the 180 and land straight into a switch manual. inevitably, i'm gonna pivot, but it's the intention not to that seems to work. see if that helps

There are 3 or 4 regular rollerbladers at my local park. One of them is a piece of shit snake but the others are alright. Always tap my board and recognize when one of them does something insane. One of them has 360 backflip flyouts locked and another can do these long crisscrossed grinds in the 10 ft end of the bowl. Respect for both. Anyway, if you just make some kind of effort to signal when you're just cruising vs dropping in, and look around before doing it, then I don't mind you. Same goes for BMXers.
Chase Edwards
I have no skill in either but nollie. I can easily do nollies and nollie shuvs but can barely even ride switch. I'll get a tiny switch ollie maybe once every 5-7 tries.

user who was complaining about OJ Insane-a-thane being too glassy at the indoor park reporting in. Yeah... I'm full of shit. I judged the wheels way too quick without riding a concrete park. This is a bold claim that'll come under scrutiny, but they feel almost exactly like Spitfire F4's, except a little glassier and harder. The Insane-a-thanes are ideal for concrete parks, just the right amount of slide for rock n rolls and reverts. I've been riding them for a solid year and a half now and I would say they are the next direct competitor with Bones and Spitfire. At the risk of sounding like i'm shilling them I would even propose to add them to recommended wheels in the pastebin. OJ Insane-a-thane 52-56mm 99 or 101a.
jelly. I have no fakie or switch in tranny. I have rocknrolls but can't bring myself to even try rock-to-fakie.
Jonathan Ramirez
Mom watch I'm doing the warped wall!
Jace Baker
Just roll up to the coping and ride down fakie. Once comfortable, start by JUST focusing on getting your front truck over the coping then bring it back in. I'm talking like a kiss to fakie. Eventually you will need to divert your focus to the "rock" aspect of the trick. That is the key to it, the rock. It feels like your on a see-saw atop the coping. Re-entry will be much like when you were just focusing on getting your front trucks over the coping only you'll be picking up more speed. Trust me, it will make all rock cariations easier when you nail the actual "rock."

Rock fakie was probably the first trick I learned in tranny, have you tried doing it on something knee-high or lower? I think that could help you to get over the fear of going down fakie. Literally one of the best feelings I know is to land a decked out rock fakie on a barrier - love that trick even though its one of the simplest ones.
Also, any good affordable protective gear you can recommend?

what the fuck? how? Enjoi gained a lot of respect from me in that KOTR two years ago and Raemers was part of that team.
This is fucking sad.

these seem perfect for me (another user). thanks

what I wrote is the exact advice that the nice dude working at Labor in NY gave me and it was some good fucking advice so I just regurgitate it whenever I can.
fucking F met him at a demo a year or two ago was a cool guy
Connor Peterson
Thanks. I did it quick because I had to hold my phone in a weird position. When it comes to foot position, you don't need to go as far me. I've been doing kickflips for years and this is the most comfortable and stable position for me. You should definitely change your foot position though. Barely having your toes on the board is unstable and makes you want to flick the board down instead of up and forward. Hope it helped.
Anyone else here who really doesn't like Jeff DeChesare's style? Feels like every trick he does down stairs is kicked down. As if he didn't even pop. I can't deny he's super good and does tricks you don't see every day but god damn is in not good looking. youtube.com/watch?v=gdpXrkXknuU
The word around is that he commited an hero, unfortunately.
Loved his attitude & skating.

my fucking waist hurts
oh, I think I've done it this time /esg/
please don't work a labour job if you can avoid it
don't ruin your skateboard time
Robert Carter
I feel you bro. Working construction and being a skater sucks ass. Can never find time and body is constantly broken.
Juan Morgan
the waist is everything, many people think it's the feet, but it's the waist. And I'm tall, so there's a lot of strain on my poor old mid section.
Kevin Walker
you know, now that I think about it, maybe poor Ben was suffering from waist issues.
I don't want to have any damage on it, please oh please, I had the same pain and discomfort a month ago.
are you talking about your waist as well?
Luis Davis
Fucking this. The fact that my torso was sore was the single biggest surprise after I started skating. It looks so leg-driven but it's all about the back and the shoulders.
Brody Phillips
was skateboarding cursed by the wu-tang clan?
Liam Powell
Back, I suppose waist can be attributed too. I used to work in concrete, so I had to wheelbarrow wet concrete all day. It was fucking horrible and I had to work with crackheads all day. I had no energy at the end of the day and weekends were reserved solely for running errands and doing housework. I don't work labour right now, luckily. I still struggle to find time to skate when work gets busy, but it isn't nearly as bad as when I was working in construction. Everybody should be forced to work a labour job for a month, I feel like that would humble a lot of people.
Carson Ross
I agree on that last part, but I think I've overdone it.
Cameron Gonzalez

I have known this partm I would say the second reason would be my knowledge of Paulo Diaz's story as a late 80s up and coming street hero and then watching his tricks in this part.

I had some words for you because I thought that was the total for one board. Then I read tool and helmet. Still man you should've waited for a sale good lord
Noah James
Down in my country I would've paid 180 dollars for a Peralta complete and 140 for the protective gear. Considering the better board, I am still way in the win even with the 50 dollar delivery
and my mother paid because I had my birthday this week
Your bones will be fine, bone injuries don't usually leave permanent damage. Mind you, I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but bones tend to heal quite well.
The things you need to look out are ligaments - fuck them up and you'll pay for it for the rest of your life. I tore the ligaments from my ankle two years ago, and its still not back to 100%, I fucked up the ligaments in my chest a year ago and I'm still having a hard time sleeping on my side.
Do not fuck with your ligaments - remember to stretch before and after every session.

Don't stretch before. At least not the types of stretches that involve maxing out a joint/muscles range of motion and holding it there. So called static streching. You are straining the shit out of your muscles and ligaments and then thrashing on them. Increasing your risk of pulling something.
Before skating, warm your joints/muscles up by moving them. Imagine a boxer about to step into the ring. They call these dynamic stretches nowadays.
Keep stretching bro. Staying flexible and nimble is the key. Tldr; >Warm up b4 >stretch after
Jeremiah Miller
Any tips on improving my tres? I can't seem to get them when I pop higher...
Wrong. You should always stretch before, BUT, you should always warm up before stretching. If you stretch without warming up, you run the risk of hurting yourself while stretching. It helps dramatically if it's hot outside.
Of course you need to fucking stretch before skating, not to mention full-body stretching if you're going to do vert. It's extremely easy to pull something otherwise.
The trashing you refer to contracts muscles and ligaments, which is precisely the reason why you need to stretch consistently. By skipping stretching before skating, you are causing your ligaments to be even more contracted at the end of the session and at that point, stretching after becomes mandatory just to maintain some semblance of flexibility.
Also, proper stretching should take at least 10, and up to 20 minutes and is systematic. Otherwise it has literally zero effect.
James Wright
>You should always stretch before
Dynamic stretching, yes. Do this before skating.
Static stretching, on the other hand. Torquing your joints/muscles past their limit and then holding it there, is NOT the kind of stretching you should be doing before skating. I don't care if you warm up before you do your deep stretching. Do not deep stretch before skating.
>stretching after becomes mandatory just to maintain some semblance of flexibility.
Nah. Im not "just maintaining some semblance of flexibility" I've been steadily gaining more range of motion and was already pretty flexible before I started "systematically" stretching.
Chase Price
let's talk when you're 30
Justin Hughes
what's dynamic stretching?
relax man, you act as if 30 is 70
David Evans
you underestimate how quickly things like muscle regeneration deteriorate with age, starting in mid-20's. there's a reason why only a handful of athletes keep getting good results in their 30's and (in some sports) 40's. but those usually have an entire team behind them to manage their regimen and they have to train twice as long and hard as people half their age to keep their form. Plus, good genetics is a major factor but most people can't rely on that.
Jaxson Adams
my friend
you're not training for a medal
you're skateboarding
Connor Mitchell
I guess self-care makes me a kook but I enjoy not waking up sore every morning while maintaining strength and range of motion, as well as the prospect of maintaining that into mid-life and old age.
Easton Powell
Im not that far behind. Let's talk when you aren't hung up on highschool gym teacher level athletic advice. >stretch before >stretch after >it's good for you, always >stretch, stretch, stretch
Dynamic stretching is the opposite of holding a position still and counting to 10. Its repeated motion to loosen you up. Still stretches you. Google will obviously explain it better than I can.
Elijah Rogers
I did sports semi-professionally half my life, I know what works for me.
Kayden Ward
you will do that just by skateboarding
I suspected as much. It feels better and more natural too.
then you have nothing to be afraid of, just ease your way into your session. Good vibes always help with that.
Aaron Martinez
Did you play any sports semi professionally that centered around hurting yourself? All I'm saying is doing a split before you get the splits isn't going to help. It may cause an injury.
Ryan Evans
29 here. What I do just to avoid injury is: -light dynamic stretch on ankles and knees, like 2 secs each -skate 10-15 mins -slightly deeper stretch: knees, ankles, hips, torso, groin, gluts, hamstrings, about 5-10 secs each. No overstretching or maxing range -skate for up to about 2 hrs -no stretch after and I feel like I'm really dumb for it, my flexibility is pretty shit.
If I don't stretch before or miss a stretch, guaranteed I'm going to randomly do something to strain whatever I missed.
Michael Thompson
tfw permanent ankle injuries
Jaxon Cox
>Did you play any sports semi professionally that centered around hurting yourself? yes, very specifically. but every sport carries a risk of injury with it. proper stretching prevents that.
Isaiah Ward
I was just practising some ollies and I somehow seriously pulled something in my lower back today. I can barely stand up. It's a bummer since the weather just got nice and now I need a few days to recover Need to remember to stretch
protective gear culture will never come around, unless your a vert dad. I'm 24 and my knees are fucked just from impact and them not being as strong as they should be for what I attempt. Pads would not have helped. Knees are designed so fucking stupidly, I hate it. I wanna skate forever.
Mmmmmmm skate mommies. There's this one skate mommy with massive jumblies and a thicc rump that I sometimes see at skateparks. Watching her melons bounce around while she's skating transition is absolutely mesmerizing. She's getting other moms to start skating too, pretty rad.
Dominic Brown
The skate milf I saw was with some handstanding skate grandpas; made me feel great knowing I can do this for a few decades if I treat my body right
Anyone Japan Skaters here, I know it's a long shot. Moving to Yoko on Monday. Dont want to give up my deck but I hear it's illegal on streets and frowned upon on sidewalks.
I read multiple threads where cops just ask you to get off but I'm American and dont want to be rude, ya know?

you're a stupid foreigner who doesn't know the rules. take advantage of that as much as possible. pretend you don't even speak english and act as confused as possible if anyone fucks with you. from what i understand, moonmen mostly hit street spots at night

i skate streets but i live outside the city.
my advice is get some soft wheels so you're less noisy- noise is probably the thing that will get the police upset with you.
i generally just hop off my board when i see police just to be safe- my japanese isn't good and i'd rather not have to be lectured and say soudesune a hundred times. a big smile and a wave can go a long way.
yokohama has a huge foreigner population relative to the rest of the country too, on top of the military base, so natives will probably expect you to be a piece of shit to begin with (for example, there are trash cans throughout yokohama because otherwise foreigners just throw it in the streets) but its kind of hard to skateboard and not step on people's toes in the city. culturally, japan is a place of putting others above you, and its not exactly easy to be quiet and out of the way on a skateboard
that being said, every japanese skateboarder i've met has been supremely nice and supremely cool, so i'd recommend hitting up the dozens of parks in tokyo and making some friends
i'm in tokyo every so often so maybe i'll see you there sometime
