What makes his WCW runs so awful is that Russo himself has such a large role. Why? The casual audience has no idea who Russo is. Dropping industry lexicon and smark terms just confuses and alienates the audience. Why is Russo suddenly so important? Why do Tony and Madden keep talking about them? Are they commissioners or? Oh they're bookers. What the fuck is a booker? Throw in the whole "I'm subverting your expectations bro," and you got a recipe for disaster.
Russo's WCW was built from the ground up to appease the smarks on the internet. Not casuals watching on TV. That was a direction that absurdly stupid at the time. WCW had already been dying, thanks to months on months of Sullivan booking and boring political dinos shuffling around. What they needed was someone to come along and give it a shot in the arm. What Russo did shove coke down its nose, and dipped as soon as the seizures started coming in
