WCW imploded purely through bad bookings which tanked the TV ratings and that Ted Turner guy pulled the plug, right?

What killed wcw was the aol merger

and Kevin Nash’s sexual assault really fucked up their public image

Hi Russo.

>WCW imploded purely through bad bookings which tanked the TV ratings and that Ted Turner guy pulled the plug, right?
Bad bookings yes, Turner pulling the plug no. Turner merged with Time Warner and Time Warner wanted nothing to do with wrestling so they sold it to Vince for basically nothing. Company was near death anyways because of bad booking.

As far as similarities, there's really nothing yet. AEW hasn't really started yet and we don't yet know who will fill what role once the company is running weekly TV. Cody, the Bucks, Kenny, and SCU have been poking fun at themselves and joking about booking themselves over and tanking the company not knowing what they're doing, so they're at least self-aware about the mistakes WCW made. Really you can't draw any comparisons until we know who the creative team is going to be.

Turner broadcasting wanted to be a family friendly company so they wouldn't allow WCW to do edgy shit to match WWF's Attitude Era, so that held back WCW's booking a lot during that time

Time Warner's merger with AOL pulled the plug on the company

WCW signed superstar talent from the WWF. Talent with a history of mainstream appeal, proven draws. There are no comparisons.

no doubt about that

If they ever make a movie about wrestling, the monday night wars would be the best era

Kek what a bitch

WCW was good and AEW is bad. This is because WCW never employed the young cucks and CAWdy's negro bedwench

Bad booking and Tv ratings (which were still good even at the end) had nothing to do with WCW's downfall. It stopped and ended with the suits wanting nothing to with wrestling.

Bischoff was going to buy WCW for $70 million which he thought would include the TV deals on TNT and TBS.

Jamies Kellner said we are cancelling WCW, so keep your $70 million and we are going to sell WCW to Vince McMahon for $3 million instead.

WCW without TV deals was pretty much worthless. Bischoff tried to get a new TV deal but didn't have enough time.

1 WCW roster from the mid card up had a guarenteed contracts which made up most of their operating cost, AEW is supposedly offering the same. It's hard to tell since 99% of the positive news with AEW is bullshit

The out of control spending forced WCW's parent company into hiring a guy who didn't know anything about wrestling,
This allowed everyone there to just carny the shit out of him, AEW on the other hand is ran by an absolute smark, so AEW is more like Wrestlicious.

Finally AEW courts ex WWE guys with the offerings of better bookings, this reeks of WCW's main event having creative control. Neville left WWE cause he had to job to Enzo and AEW is littered with and exclusively courting guys like him . This will only lead to nothing but fuck finishes to keep guys egos happy.

Surely it had nothing to do with slapnuts jarrett main eventing and nwo 2000 shitting everything up!

WCW had wrestling stars and talent; Flair, Hogan, Savage, Sting, Heenan. That's the difference.

WCW had draws so that's a big difference from AEW

Blaming Jarrett sounds a real reddit of you. Time Warner would have gotten rid of WCW regardless of whether or not he was main eventing.

Eric keeps pushing this narrative. But I always thought that surely if WCW was making the same money it was making in '96,'97 and '98 WCW wouldn't have been sold. Yeah the suits definitely hated wrestling but pinning it all on that seems like a way to avoid all responsibility for it collapsing to me.

WCW could draw normies, smarks and marks
AEW can at best draw smarks

The top stars having booking power is a big one and not a good one

You morons are comparing what WCW did like 8 years into existence to AEW which hasnt even started yet. AEW is going to have to have at least a few years running strong before its really poaching superstar talent. Be patient and just let it happen

>AEW courts ex WWE guys with the offerings of better bookings
So far the only shit we've heard from anyone in AEW is that they specifically are not doing this. The idea that everyone who wants out of WWE is 100% going to AEW is propagated by fans and media, AEW signings so far haven't demonstrated anything like that
>AEW on the other hand is ran by an absolute smark
A smark who runs a wildly successful analytics company and is smart enough not to try getting too involved in creative and stick to the business side (see his interviews where he is specifically asked about this and says he's staying out of creative or on-screen appearances)

Each of them have specifically talked about this in interviews and they even explicitly poke fun at themselves in BTE over this. I don't think this is a Flair/Hogan ego situation. Cody and Kenny have both specifically mentioned how excited they are to develop new talent.

that was the final nail in the coffin but the absolute tailspin the company was in by 2000 was the real reason. if the merger had happened in the salad days of 97-98 they never would have dreamed of selling

this. you might hate wrestling but it's a rare corporate executive who also hates having a free pile of money handed to him over and over and over

a tailspin caused by the failure and booking of Goldturd who sank the company and ran people like Jericho and Raven off.
