Up until 1996, after WWF lost Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, who contributed to WCW beating them in head-to-head television ratings, WWF's guarantees to wrestlers were minimal. Losing talent forced Vince McMahon to pay guaranteed money to win bidding wars for Marc Mero (who turned out to be a flop, but his wife ended up making up for it), Jeff Jarrett, Brian Pillman and led to Bret Hart getting an unheard of $1.5 million guarantee and 20-year contract (the last 17 years were at a greatly reduced rate since it wasn't thought he'd be a full-time performer).
