They're an integral part to wrasslin' at this point. It's like how they like to have a bunch of titles, because that gives them an excuse to put matches on a PPV card. Everyone wants a title, but no one really gives a fuck about two indie-shitters cutting politically correct promos on each other over basically nothing. You don't need any build-up with title matches either. You just announce the #1 contender to the next PPV on the RAW after a PPV ends, and the cycle repeats endlessly. Likewise, you don't really need much of a build-up for authority storylines. Authority figures are a necessary part to maintaining the flow of the show, so they're always going to be around. So why not have the GM randomly hate some face, and try to stop him from getting the title or whatever, only to have the face go over in the end?

The idea that authority angles are overused is something concocted by the smarks are /r/squared circle. It's because they're know-it-alls, and have this vague notion that it's possible to write a captivating story between two people with no outside stimulus whatsoever. But the truth is that no one gives a shit about matches that mean nothing, even with main-eventers. It only works with money matches, like Rock vs Cena. Meanwhile, smarks all loved the Daniel Bryan storyline, despite the fact that it was a pretty bland story, and relied entirely on both heel authority figures and an arbitrary "title hunt."

Are you talking about the recent Daniel Bryan vs Kofi storyline? Or the Daniel Bryan vs Authority angle leading up to WM30? Because everyone hated that angle. They could have built something great with Bryan vs Orton, but instead they made Randy look like Silent Simp every week and did so much garbage start/stop with Bryan that no one cared. People were happy for the title change but that was about it.
