Peaked mid-1999 I'd say but all of it after Heyman took over is worth a watch as he's a good booker. The cruiserweights and TV title division are by far the best thing about it and still hold up, the main events are generally these plodding, weapon shot schmozzes that go all over the arena. Crowd loved them at the time but they're nothing special now.
Grab all the freeleech XWT torrents if you wanna check it out, don't bother with the Network copies as they're dubbed, censored shit.

It was great up until the point Raven left for WCW. I was always jealous that I introduced my college dormmates to prowrestling (we'd have one tv on RAW and one on Nitro - everybody did) and ECW was in town. It was my girlfriend's bday so I couldn't go and they never even seen ECW before, but they went and came back and acted like they saw God.

Apparently Sabu took my buddy's seat and spring boarded on another wrestler plowing into the crowd. Some fans brought weapons for the wrestlers to use.

After that, they were sold. You never saw crowd interaction like that on Raw/Nitro, that's what made ECW special.

Don’t shit on the main event when “The Franchise” Shane Douglas was on top. HHH stole his entire gimmick from Shane. He was the blueprint that all “attitude” wrestlers tried to emulate, but couldn’t quite duplicate.

Other acts that put up great work in ECW: Candito, Public Enemy, Bill Alfonzo, The Eliminators. The Sandman also had more performance charisma than anyone currently in WWE despite never spending a minute in a wrestling school or a gym, literally a white trash Hulk Hogan

Shane was always great while he was there, yeah. He's in WWF or WCW for quite a bit of ECW's run though.

It was pretty good but you could still tell it was going off the rails, like that random DQ a couple episodes in mentioned earlier. Naturally that was a Vince call to emphasize how it was a "new ECW", the first of many. Original ECW actually did have DQs sometimes but it was a ref's discretion thing and would usually be due to not breaking on a rope break or some shit, they still did ref distraction spots but I don't recall instances of a match thrown out due to weapon usage.

When should I start watching their weekly show on the network? I know most of their good shit came on those episodes. I mean...some of their ppvs were great. But some of them were fucking awful.

I was like 10 at the time, our nation had just it's literally 5th TV channel ever and they showed Smackdown tapings very late at night. Some of the more rebellious boys of our class stayed up past their bedtimes and taped these in secret, and we would then watch them to the horror of our parents and teachers because it was such previously unseen violence etc. Fortunately one boy had deadbeat alcoholics as parents and they would allow us to go there to watch these tapes among the cigarette smoke and drinking middle aged weirdos.

This same kid had a big brother who was fucking insane even back then who was just getting into p2p networks, only the most bottom tier shit ones but anyway. He would charge us our combined allowances for shitty potato quality VHS rips burned on DVD's, downloaded over a 56K modem for days, even weeks. We naturally didn't have any fucking clue about anything so he curated these compilations for us. Early internet stuff like Bumfights, Mischief, CKY, most ancient memes, little bit of porn etc. Shit was so cash for us little turds, we would go to this flat every day after school to enjoy some X-rated shit while second hand smoking and sometimes secretly tasting vodka that old bitch was always drinking.

But then he fucking downloaded a ECW show and sold it to us. Up to this point the most hardcore wrestling related thing we had ever seen had been like a chairshot to head, occasional table spot and the "dont try this at home" clip where foley falls from the cell, and even that had sparked persistent rumors in our school that he actually died in that clip because we didn't understand foley was three different characters.

This was a whole different ballpark, flaming tables, barbed wire, fans bring the weapons, blood everywhere. Our little shitbird minds actually thought deathmatch meant they are fighting to death and it sure as shit looked like it.

This same big brother actually spoke a little bit of english and he told us he had read about actual timebomb and piranha deathmatches happening in Japan, which was fucking mindblowing to us.

The ECW DVD quickly became the most legendary item in our entire school and quickly gained notoriety among students because it had "people fighting to death", there was a actual vetting process before anyone new was allowed to see it so no one would tell the teachers or their parents about it. And then of course that fucking shithead from neighboring class got traumatized, wet his bed because of nightmares he got, and all hell broke loose. It was like fucking Gestapo cracking down on the school and every home, everything got thrown over until they found the disc and watched the content on a parent/teachers meeting. They claimed a particulary religious teacher "fainted and needed sick leave" because of this sickening material and that they couldnt even watch it to the good parts, they pussied out to a fucking table spot or something.

It even got to our small village piece of shit local newspaper. "Local politicians, police, teachers and parents outraged after ultraviolent material circulates among children. Actual deaths shown on tape!"

All this did was fucking feed our bloodlust and marking for ECW. The so called "original 5" who knew where the disc had come from never snitched about it so we retained our connection to the deadbeat big brother who would keep selling us these DVDs at exorbitant prices until he started using so much drugs he sold his computer. Fortunately at this point some of us had internet access in our homes too so in the end nothing of value was lost.

We will never get back those few years of marking hard on ECW and thinking it was real because we were stupid little kids. Nothing will ever again taste so good as taste of second hand cigarette smoke as someone goes through a flaming table.
