Diamond and Pearl were grindy pieces of shit and ruined gen 4 for a lot of people. Platinum came out and it turned out to be a lot better than Diamond and Pearl but now we're pitting it against the Michaels of the entire franchise: Heart Gold and Soul Silver. People who already didn't like Diamond and Pearl said fuck Sinnoh and played those but the people who gave it a shot generally liked it. There's your no in-between.

The only reason gen 2 had such good feedback was because you could go to Kanto right after. If it were just Johto, the game would have been less well-received and Hoenn wouldn’t have almost killed the franchise when it stopped the expectaions of adding an extra region.
