Maintaining character outside of the shows is part of the performance, and thus it enhances the show to maintain kayfabe. If a fan walks up to a wrestler, traditionally they expect to talk to the character, not some random guy who plays the character on TV. Everyone knows it's fake. It's not about that and it hasn't been for a very long time. Unfortunately, a lot of people do break kayfabe now, and I think a lot of the art is lost as wrestling becomes more and more like every other bit of entertainment. Maybe some people not getting it is just a consequence of wrestling being the only form of entertainment that intertwines a fictional character with one's public image, and if that's the case then so be it. I'd rather keep one of the most special aspects of wrestling intact than cater to people who just don't get it and want it to be like any other type of acting.
