From 80s Hogan era, to the new generation to suddenly gun waving on TV?
It was such a huge jump and such a departure that it could be seen just a comical (to any adult) as Doink or Duke the dumpster.
WWF never had to be cool, they just had to maintain a relevance, usually through children.
Really, the only thing that did was to look at what was cool last the time --Terminator 2, 90s edge-- and grow the same kid audience up only a few more years. They definitely carried their same 80s audience over by catering to that specific teenager age group, whereas in the 80s it was children.
I see Pillman's angle as growing pains into becoming something new and edgy for a company that never had to take it quite there before.
The baby snake giving all the venom because it didn't know any better. That was some dark shit, along with the ministry and the faction race wars.
Attitude era as it's remembered now is titties and crotch chops, and of course Austin/McMahon.
That period was a weird time for sure.
